License Information for Contractors/Homeowners
A homeowner who is also an occupant may apply for and obtain permits for remodeling their home. If you do not occupy the dwelling or you’re a contractor and need to apply for and obtain a building permit for a one- or two-family dwelling building or remodeling job in Wisconsin you need two business credentials from the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services.
Dwelling Contractor Credential
The first credential needed from the WI Department of Safety & Professional Services is called the Dwelling Contractor Credential. You can obtain this credential by submitting an application form, required fees, and a certificate of insurance stating that your company has a minimum liability insurance set by the State of WI. This credential is held by the company and must be renewed annually.
Dwelling Contractor Qualifier Credential
As of January 1, 2008, the second credential needed from the WI Department of Safety & Professional Services to obtain permits is called the Dwelling Contractor Qualifier Credential. This credential must be renewed every two years, and is held by an individual within the company. That individual can be the company’s owner, partner or an employee of the person who holds the Dwelling Contractor Credential.
