4th Annual Día de los Muertos Celebration at the Oshkosh Public Museum Saturday, October 11, from 10 am to 4:30 pm
The Oshkosh Public Museum is proud to host its 4th annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. This free community event aims to enhance cultural awareness by showcasing traditional celebrations from one of the fastest-growing cultural groups in our region. We invite diverse audiences to participate with us at the Museum, aligning with our mission to preserve, promote, and share history, art, and culture with Oshkosh residents and visitors alike.
Admission to the Museum, crafts, and entertainment is free. The main tent will feature authentic entertainment, including Mariachi Corcel De Madison and Hola's Grupo Folklorico Dancers. Family- friendly activities celebrating the cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos include Sugar Skull face painting, making marigolds, papel picado, and scratch art sugar skulls. The Museum has teamed up with the Oshkosh Public Library to bring the Heart of the Beast mask and storytelling theater sessions. Students from the Chicana/o Latinx Studies department at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will offer translation services.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, the Museum has displayed an Ofrenda Altar, a tradition that welcomes and honors the spirits of deceased loved ones. It serves as a gathering place for joyous remembrance and a spiritual focal point, helping the dead find their way back to the living world for a temporary visit. With the funding received for this event, we supplied the materials for the Spanish classes at Vel Phillips to create mini-ofrendas, providing an opportunity for students to learn about this cultural tradition.
Spend the day with us at the Oshkosh Public Museum to celebrate Día de los Muertos on Saturday, October 11, from 10 am to 4:30 pm.
