Upgraded Commercial Building Code effective September 1 Change marks first improvements to this code in a decade
The state of Wisconsin announced the adoption of a modernized Wisconsin Commercial Building Code, effective September 1, 2025. This significant update marks the first improvements to the code in a decade, aligning regulations with the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) and International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) standards, with specific adaptations for Wisconsin.
The updates were developed through collaborative efforts led by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), involving stakeholders, industry leaders, and the public. The revised code will enhance safety, energy efficiency, and overall performance standards for commercial buildings, including multi-family residential structures in Oshkosh. The code's promulgation follows a Wisconsin Supreme Court decision (Evers v. Marklein), which enabled the DSPS to finalize these vital updates and the city of Oshkosh to begin implementing them.
Implementation Timeline:
The updated code will be mandatory for all plans submitted on or after October 1, 2025. Transition provisions allow plans to be submitted under the current (2015) code until then. This grace period aims to ease the transition for builders and developers in Oshkosh, ensuring ample time for compliance preparations.
Oshkosh’s Commitment to Building Safety:
The city of Oshkosh remains committed to fostering a safe and innovative building environment. Additionally, DSPS will offer virtual webinars for industry education and support seamless implementation. This adoption aligns Oshkosh with leading international building standards, ensuring safer, more energy-efficient buildings that meet evolving environmental and technological needs.
