Emergency calls are received and dispatched by the Winnebago County 911 Communications Center. When the firefighters are alerted they spring into action to respond to the emergency. A combination of the departments Captains (7) and Lieutenants (14) lead the crews and provide leadership and direction at the incident. An Equipment Operator (21) makes sure that the crew and fire apparatus arrive safely. The Firefighters (55) are also trained as Paramedics and are well prepared to extinguish fires or make life saving medical interventions.

A Battalion Chief oversees and supervises the personnel and activities of the department on their assigned shift. Every Battalion Chief has completed extensive trainings on the Incident Command System (ICS) and the Blue Card ™ Command Certification so that they can safely and efficiently manage large scale incidents.

The Oshkosh Fire Department operates three platoons, an ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ shift. Each shift will be on duty for 24 hours at a time every other day, for 5 days. After the 5 days are completed they will be off for 96 hours (4 days). During their shift firefighters respond from, live, work, eat, sleep, and train at the Fire Station. Every day the men and women of the Oshkosh Fire Department have the goal of being trusted, efficient and effective professionals who provide a safe, secure and healthy community.
