In 2022, the Oshkosh Fire Department was recognized by the Wisconsin EMS Association as the EMS Service of the Year through their Excellence in Service Awards. The Oshkosh Fire Department’s rescuers were noted for their service, dedication, and persistence to go beyond the call of duty.

Under the direction of their Medical Director, and the oversight of the EMS Division the Oshkosh Fire Department provides medical care to the sick and injured. Our Paramedics provide a high level of pre-hospital care known as Advanced Life Support (ALS). Ambulances located at the city's six fire stations respond with fire trucks to provide timely care to the citizens of Oshkosh. Ambulances are staffed with two firefighter/paramedics. Three primary ambulances are always staffed and ready to respond. If all three of the primary ambulances are on calls, the fire trucks in Oshkosh are also staffed with paramedics. The paramedics on the fire engines can respond with additional cross staffed ambulances to provide seamless care, even during very busy periods. A Battalion Chief monitors call volumes throughout the city to ensure Oshkosh always has the ability to respond to medical or fire emergencies that may arise.

The City of Oshkosh Fire Department responds to all emergency and non-emergency medical calls within the city limits. It also responds to emergency calls in the following Cities, Townships, and Villages through an Inter-Governmental Agreement:

• Town of Omro
• Town of Poygan
• Town of Rushford
• Town of Van Dyne
• Town of Winneconne
• Village of Winneconne
• Town of Utica

The EMS Division also provides a Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement program for medical calls. The Oshkosh Fire Department has an EMS Coordinator on each shift who reviews patient care reports, gathers data and identifies trends, provide education, and mentor new employees. Utilizing the Just Culture ™ format emergency medical calls are peer reviewed to continuously seek ways to assure quality and to improve our care.
