STEIGER PARK William A. Steiger Park is located on the south shore of the Fox River east and west of the Wisconsin Street Bridge, Figure 3.4A-1. The bridge is slated to be replaced in 2006 by WisDOT, and will shift westward approximately 85 feet from the existing structure. When completed in 2008, the bridge will include an underpass for pedestrians which will link both sides of the park, Figure 3.4A-5. The western portion of Wil- liam A. Steiger Park currently has a walk and fi shing platform; whereas the eastern portion of the park consists of lawn and trees. The Riverwalk will begin east of the new Wisconsin Street Bridge and continue east- ward to Pioneer Drive. The park portion of the riverwalk extends from the bridge to a proposed boat launch, Figure 3.4A-3, down river of the existing fi shing pier near Michigan Street. Elements of the Riverwalk in this zone consist of concrete walk, bollard lights, benches, trash recep- tacles, landscaping, and new rip-rap edge. Concrete Walk – The width of William A. Steiger Park varies from 40 to 80 feet east of the bridge. The Riverwalk cross section shall be 12 feet wide with bollard lights, consistently aligned 18 inches south of the pavement evenly spaced at 25½ feet on center, Figure 3.4A-2. Scoring and jointing of the walk consist of 4 foot squares with an 18 inch band at the bollard light placement. The Riverwalk is to undulate through the Park providing a park like experience. Bollard Lights – The use of only bollard lights in William A. Steiger Park is intended to lessen the overall amount of light in the park consistent with passive recreational use. Bollard lights are to be placed approxi- mately 25½ feet on center aligned 18 inches south of the walkway. Benches – Eight benches are suggested to be placed in groups of two (four groups total) approximately every 106 feet along the land based side of the Riverwalk facing the Fox River. Benches are to be placed outside the 12 foot clear zone of the walk on concrete extensions 4 feet wide and 16 feet long to accommodate two benches and space for a wheelchair. Trash Receptacles – Three receptacles are to be evenly located between the four bench groups. Receptacles are to be placed outside the 12 foot clear zone of the walk on the land base side of the Riverwalk. The base for the receptacles is to be a 4 foot square concrete pad to match the walk scoring. Landscaping – Existing canopy trees along the rivers edge are to be maintained with future redevelopment of the rip-rap edge. Native can- opy trees spaced at approximately 40 feet are to be placed on the land based side of the Riverwalk to provided additional shade. Species se- lected should have relatively low maintenance requirements with a his- tory of survival in extreme conditions. Rip-Rap – The existing river edge of William A. Steiger Park is random stone with concrete pour over the top. The existing edge should be removed and replaced with suitable rip-rap stone. Additional stones rough cut with fl at edges should be considered in some locations to provide sitting and standing opportunities for park users who fi sh the river. In natural such as the park edge and the marina island the use of integrated bank treatment is strongly suggested. Figure 3.4A-5 Figure 3.4A-2 Figure 3.4A-3 Figure 3.4A-4
