3.0 DESIGN CHARACTER
3.4E SOUTH SHORE EAST ZONE
The Riverwalk at the South Shore East Zone is located between Main
Street Bridge and the railroad bridge on the south shore of the Fox River,
Figure 3.4E-1. Pioneer Drive adjacent to the Fox River is potentially
planned to be abandoned to create mixed-used development opportuni-
ties. Connection to Pioneer Drive along the east of the railroad tracks is
to occur via East 9th Avenue. Realignment of East 9th Avenue and Pio-
neer Drive presents potential open space zone for a small parking lot for
public access to the Riverwalk. In the South Shore East Zone location of
the Riverwalk components consist of concrete walk, bollard and pedes-
trian lights, benches, trash receptacles, landscape, and new rip-rap.
Concrete Walk - The cross section for the Riverwalk maintains 1 foot
wide curb edge (typical 6 inches high) along the land based side, 12 foot
wide clear zone for the walk, additional 3 foot width for bollard lights
and 1 foot wide by 11 foot long 6 inch curb on the water base edge with
a total width of 16 feet, Figure 3.4E-2. Scoring and jointing of the walk
consists of 4 foot squares with 18 inch band at bollard light placement.
Equally spacing two curbs 11 feet long between each bollard light al-
lows surface drainage through to the river. In some location adjacent to
residential and mixed use developments a 15 to 18 inch wall should be
considered to provide a visual edge between public and private uses.
Bollard and Pedestrian Lights – The pedestrian lights are to match the
fi xture at the Riverside Park Leach Amphitheater. Pedestrian lights are
spaced approximately 75 feet apart. Primary function of the pedestrian
light is to provide continuity of the Riverwalk with Riverside Park as
well as providing additional lighting to the walk. Primary walk lighting
is to be provided by bollard lights located approximately 25½ feet apart
within the handrail system. Visually the bollard fi xture is to play off the
detail of the pedestrian fi xture and handrail design.
Benches – Fourteen benches are suggested to be place in groups of two
(seven groups total) approximately 160 feet apart along the Riverwalk.
Benches are to be located on the land based side of the Riverwalks fac-
ing the Fox River. Benches are to be placed outside the 12 foot clear
zone of the walk on concrete extensions 4 feet wide and 16 feet long to
accommodate (two) 6 foot benches and space for wheelchair.
Trash Receptacles – Five receptacles are to be evenly located between
the Six bench groups along the Riverwalk. Receptacles are to be placed
outside the 12 foot clear zone of the walk on the land based side of the
Riverwalk. The base for the receptacles is to be 4 foot square concrete
pad to match the walk scoring.
Landscape – Landscape falls within 14 foot zone between the concrete
walk (16 foot width) and the property line creating a 30 foot Riverwalk
Easement in the South Shore East zone. Landscape materials should
consist of native perennials for low elements and native canopy trees for
shading. Canopy trees should be spaced approximately 40 feet apart to
be consistent with other portions of the Riverwalk. Landscape materi-
als selected should have relatively low maintenance with a history of
survival in extreme conditions.
Rip-Rap – The existing river edge along Pioneer Drive is random stone
with concrete pour over the top. The existing edge should be removed
and replaced with suitable rip-rap stone. Additional stones rough cut
with fl at edges should be considered in some locations to provide sitting
and standing opportunities for Riverwalk users who fi sh the river, Figure

Fixed Docks – Docks are located along the north edge of the River-
walk. Recommended dockage consists of 6 foot wide head piers with
four-foot wide fi nger piers, Figure 3.4E-4. The head pier is accessed
centrally at each pier section to minimize placement of security fenc-
ing and gates. Each access point is to have security gates. Security
gates are to be designed integrally with the Riverwalk handrail detail.
