It is anticipated that seasonal dockage will be developed in conjunction with mixed-use redevelopment of underutilized land. Riverwalk components consist of concrete walk, steel sheet pile, stainless steel or aluminum and wood railing, bollard and pedestrian lights, landscaping, and fi xed docks. Concrete Walk - Once the Wisconsin Street bridge replacement is com- pleted in 2008, the WIOUWASH trail will connect via a pedestrian un- derpass to the Riverwalk along the north shore, Figure 3.3A-5. The cross section for the Riverwalk will be a 12 foot wide clear zone for the walkway, and an additional 3 foot width of pavement for the rail- ing and bollard lights along the River’s edge, for a total width of 16 feet, Figure 3.3A-2. Scoring and jointing of the walkway consists of four-foot squares with a periodic 18 inch wide band to accommodate bollard light placement. The steel sheet pile along the River’s edge will be topped with a poured-in-place concrete cap with a 4 inch cantilever. This treatment extends east to the proposed boat launch. East of the boat launch the walkway becomes sinuous with a variable band of landscap- ing along the River. In some locations adjacent to residential and mixed use developments, a 15 to 18 inch wall should be considered to provide a visual edge and minor physical separation between public and private uses. Steel Sheet Pile – The existing edge of the Marion Road Zone consists of concrete and wood pile structures. To protect the shore, improve aes- thetics, and accommodate redevelopment, edge condition improvements are required. Steel sheet pile consistent with the river edge at Riverside Park near the Leach Amphitheater would be optimal. Stainless Steel or Aluminum, and Wood Railing – All vertical edges from the walk surface to the river along the Riverwalk are to have handrails for public safety. Handrails consist of stainless steel or aluminum tubes for post and structure elements and stainless steel cables for horizontal midrails, Figure 3.3A-4. Horizontal midrails should be designed to de- tract from foot placement. The top handrail consists of wood placed at a slight angle, 5 to 10%, for leaning and resting opportunities. Landscaping – Landscape will occur within the 5 foot zone between the north edge of the concrete walkway (16 foot width) and the property line creating a 21 foot Riverwalk easement in the Marion Road Zone. Landscaping materials should consist of low-stature native perennials and native canopy trees. Landscape materials selected should require relatively low maintenance and have the ability of survival in extreme conditions. Shade trees should be placed approximately 40 feet apart on center. Fishing Pier - A small pier is to be located west of the former railroad right-of-way. The pier is to be constructed of wood decking on steel pile supports to match the fi xed docks, Figure 3.3A-3. The pier is to have the handrail application as a extension from the Riverwalk, matching the details. Benches are to be placed outside the 12 foot clear zone of the walk on concrete extensions 4 feet wide and 16 feet long to accommodate two benches and space for a wheelchair Trash Receptacles – Five receptacles are to be evenly located between the seven bench groups. Receptacles are to be placed outside the 12 foot clear zone of the walk on the land base side of the Riverwalk. The base for the receptacles is to be a 4 foot square concrete pad to match the walk scoring. Bollard and Pedestrian Lights – The pedestrian light is to match the fi x- ture used at the Riverside Park Leach Amphitheater. Pedestrian lights are spaced approximately 75 feet apart. Primary function of the pedes- trian light is to provide continuity of the Riverwalk with Riverside Park as well as providing additional lighting to the walk. Primary walk light- ing is to be provided by bollard lights located approximately 25½ feet apart within the handrail system. Visually the bollard fi xture is to play off the detail of the pedestrian fi xture and handrail design. Boat Launch - A boat launch is proposed for the Marion Road Zone. The loading area for boats in the water and vehicles should be located outside the 12 foot clear zone for the Riverwalk, Figure 3.3A-7. The launch will contain to piers to support facility. The pier should match the construction techniques of the fi xed docks. Fixed Docks – Docks are located along the north edge of the Riverwalk. Recommended dockage consists of 6 foot wide head piers with 4 foot wide fi nger piers, Figure 3.3A-9. The head pier is accessed centrally at each pier section to minimize placement of security fencing and gates, Figure 3.3A-8. Each access point is to have security gates.
