RULES FOR OUTDOOR AND OPEN BURNING
THE VIOLATION OF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING
REGULATIONS SHALL RESULT IN THE IMMEDIATE
EXTINGUISHEMENT OF THE FIRE AND MAY RESULT IN
CITATIONS BEING ISSUED
Campfires: Campfires are only permitted in approved campgrounds. The City of
Oshkosh does not have any approved campgrounds.
Outdoor Fireplaces: Outdoor fireplaces are allowed. Home-made appliances
will NOT be allowed. Only commercially made fireplaces shall be used. These
fireplaces shall be used in accordance with all manufacturers’ instructions, to
include the following requirements:
1. The outdoor fireplace shall be an assembly that includes a bowl for holding the
wood, a screen to contain embers and sparks, a co ver, and supports to ensure
clearances to combustibles. The outdoor fireplace shall have a set of users’
instructions.
2. Only dry wood is to be burned—NO YARD WASTE
3. The fireplace cannot be used within 15 feet from all buildings, combustibles, or
lot lines.
4. The fireplace cannot be used within 15 feet of a wood deck, porch or patio.
5. A method of fire extinguishment shall be readily available, such as a garden
hose or a fire extinguisher with at least a 4A rating.
6. All spark screens and covers are to be in place.
7. The fireplace shall be supervised at all times by a responsible adult.
8. The fire shall be completely extinguished prior to leaving the fireplace
unsupervised.
