OSHKOSH COMMITTEE ON AGING (COA) MINUTES
November 6, 2018
A.)Ms. Richey called the meeting to order at 8:03 a.m.
B.) PRESENT: Julie Maslowski; Xandy Kloeckl Claude Benedict;Judy Richey; Ron
Duerkop; Sue Ashton;Peggy Bellin; Deb Allison-Aasby
STAFF: Bobbie Luft, Office Assistant

C. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Mr. Benedict moved to accept the minutes as written, Mr. Duerkop seconded. Motion
carried to accept the minutes as written.
D.)Citizens Statements- None
E.) NEW BUSINESS:
a) Beth Culp; Long Term Support Division manager Winnebago County Department of
Human Services; Rebecca (Becca) Groleau-Dementia Specialist, presented a power
point explaining the position for the Dementia Care Specialist and the services and
support provided. Ms. Groleau explained various programs:
• Leeps;volunteer based program, helping individuals exercise and stay social
• Dice; going to be trained on step by step method to understand behavior, work with
caregiver in home
• Powerful Tools for Caregivers, working with the health department on needs and
respite care options
• Memory Cafes; Ms. Groleau will be taking over the library cafe and coordinating
what the theme for the month will be as well as coordinating themes among other
cafes
• Purple Angel; trains businesses how to work with customers with dementia, the
business will receive a decal for the window to show their support
• Events; December 18th there will be a play regarding the process of getting
dementia, it will be hosted two different times, once in the afternoon and once in
the evening, Location is to be determined yet, possibilities are on the Miron
building and an Oshkosh high school; there is also a dementia live virtual training;
Schreiber Alumni Center will have a speaker on Alzheimer's and well as Ms.
Groleau speaking: updating website so there will be a Alzheimer's tab, making it
more user friendly
• St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Commercial Street in Neenah offers free respite care
from 1-3 pm the 1St and 2nd Monday of the month. There is a church In Oshkosh that
has inquired to offer this as well, however the details are still being worked out.
This requires no financial background information and is not government based.
• November 291h from 4:30-6 pm at Winnebago County ADRC there will be free pizza
for caregivers and their loved ones. RSVP by November 281h t0920 236 1227.
Ms. Culp explained currently Ms. Groleau has not been working closing with the medical
facilities. She stated you first need the programs in place to be able to offer them and that
is what she has been working on. Discussion on participation in various programs took
place. Ms. Maslowski stated the Neighborhood Associations would be a great way to get
the word out on various programs.
b) Location for December 41h's meeting will be held at the Safety Building room SBI
F.) OLD BUSINESS:
a) Strengthen our Partnership with Neighborhood Assoc. and Other Partners-Lurton
Blassingame-None
b) Affordable Transportation and Delivery Services for Seniors-Judy Richey-Ms. Richey
announced that Making the Ride Happen is looking to increase their volunteers.
c) Create Community Design & Policy that supports an Age Friendly community-Jean
Wollerman-None
d) Improve Communication and Visibility of Available Services to Seniors-Ron
Duerkop-Mr. Duerkop announced that spoofing continues to be a concern from the
Social Security Office. If you receive a call stating they are from Social Security, you
should hang up an report the call to the local police and to this number 1 800 269 0271.
• October 11th Social Security Administration announced the annual cost-of-living
adjustment will increase 2.8%. The standard monthly premium for part B
enrollees will increase by $1.50 to $135.50 and the annual deductible with increase
by$2 to $185. Medicare Part A inpatient hospital deductible will increase by $24 to
$1,364.00
• Ms. Ashton reminded everyone to test and change smoke alarm as well as carbon
monoxide detector batteries. Symptoms of carbon monoxide are sometimes
undetectable or can be dizziness, headache, shortness of breath, confused,
nauseated or simply pass out. Individuals should be immediately removed to
fresh air and call 911. Wisconsin State Law now requires carbon monoxide
detectors to be placed on each floor level in all Wisconsin residences.
G.)OTHER BUSINESS:
Mrs. Allison-Aasby expressed how neat it was to see how far along this committee has
come in the last year.
Ms. Richey stated the Senior Expo had a good turnout, met some nice people, overall it
was a good experience. They had nice posters and handouts to present to visitors. She
announced 2019 Senior Expo will be the 1St Tuesday in October.
Ms. Richey encourage members to review the old strategic plan done in 2012 compared
to the 2017 plan we've been working with. Please communicate with their committees to
determine how far we have come, what have been our successes, what goals and changes
need to be done.

Mrs. Allison-Aasby moved to adjourn, Mrs. Maslowski seconded, motion carried to adjourn
at 9:07 am.
