RE: Update #11: October 1 to 31, 2018
Archaeological Data Recovery at the Golf Course Site (47WN0049)
Dear Ms. Nieforth,
Archaeological investigations continued during October 2018, implementing the Archaeological Data
Recovery Plan for the Golf Course Site (47WN0049), City of Oshkosh, Winnebago County. This document
provides a summary of the laboratory investigations conducted in October 2018 and planned tasks for
November 2018.
Work Conducted in August 2018
Activities this month consisted of laboratory processing, artifact inventory, and skeletal analysis.
During October, the sorting and inventory of materials recovered through flotation occurred and is on-
going. The sorting process selects the cultural material from non -cultural materials (rough rock, modern day
vegetal materials). The cultural materials are then inventoried into major material culture classes (pottery,
lithic-chipped stone, lithic-ground stone, faunal, floral). The inventory for the flotation and water screen
samples is on -going. The inventory provides an initial sort and examination of artifacts prior to the more
in-depth artifact analysis.
Human remains were recovered from four features during field investigations. The skeletal analysis, following
the procedures and guidelines of the Wisconsin Historical Society, is currently nearing completion. The
draft report regarding the human burial features and osteological analysis will be submitted to the Wisconsin
Historical by January 2019.
Upcoming Tasks
We will continue with the laboratory investigations during November 2018. Tasks include sorting and
inventorying processed flotation and waterscreened samples and commencing analysis of prehistoric pottery,
lithic artifacts, and floral remains recovered from flotation and waterscreen processing.
I will continue to provide you with an update on our progress on a monthly basis. You may expect our next
update at the end of November 2018.
As always, if there are questions or concerns regarding the project, please do not hesitate to contact me at
(414) 229-3078 or at haasjr@uwm.edu.
Sincerely,
Jennifer R. Haas, M.A., Principal Investigator
