HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 5-29-18 ADVISORY BOARD OF THE OSHKOSH SENIORS CENTER MEETING MINUTES, May 29, 2018 PRESENT: Bob Cornell; Bob Kolinski; Mary Kirsch, Wendy Schaefers, Jackie Kuhn, Scott Huiras; Nancy Casey; Bev Mallon; Sandy Noe Guests: Bob Weston;Teri John; Cedric Richeson; Liz Lahm;Jane Daughtery Excused: Vicki Leichtfuss; Liz Hintz Absent: STAFF: Jean Wollerman; Bobbie Luft Mary called the meeting to order at 3:34 pm. Consent Items • Approval of April 24, 2018 Minutes: Scott moved to accept the minutes as written; Jackie seconded. All in favor, motion carried to accept the minutes as written. Informational Topics: • Mary thanked Bob Cornell, Vicki Leichtfuss, Sandy Noe and Liz Hintz for their time served on the board. She then welcomed Bob Weston,Teri John,Jane Daughtery, Liz Lahm and Cedric Richeson as new members. • Mary read a short bio of each board member as an introduction for the new members. Discussion Items: • Jean passed out a budget sheet, detailing revenue and expenditures. She explained she is starting a different process with the programming staff. She stated she will be starting the budget process next month for 2019. Bobbie explained the gift from Rosemarie Pitz. She stated it was from shares from WEC Energy Group with a value of just over $15,000. The gift from the shares last year was approximately$8,000. Her kind,generous donation is greatly appreciated by the Center. She explained that for the next budget she is going to take the revenue from the insurance reimbursements and put more into the 231 account as the majority of use for those programs comes from staffing. She explained this would help adjust the expenses. Bob K. questioned if there were plans to hire another fitness instructor. Jean explained she has to review the numbers in the budget. She explained the revenue from the insurance reimbursement programs is better than last year, but a bit shy of her goal for this year. She stated she is doing a walk through with the maintenance worker twice a month to review the buildings condition. She stated the facilities maintenance department has in their plan to replace the roof on the south building next year. She stated the windows in the willow rooms are all rotting and this too would come from facilities budget. Jane questioned where the tax levy funds come from. Jean stated they are from City Property taxes. Bob C. questioned if there would be staff additions. Jean explained she would like a full time fitness supervisor as there is currently no one in the afternoons. She state that 50%of Center visits are from fitness areas. Bob K. expressed concern for not having staff there at all times while participants are working out. • Sandy explained the expectations of the liaison to the FOSC. She stated the liaison would be on the FOSC board as a voting member and meeting are held on the last Tuesday of the month. She stated the annual appeal has received over $40,000 in donations and a midyear appeal will be sent out as a soft touch, highlighting programs. She stated Food Truck Friday will be held on June 15' and they have received lots of sponsors and volunteers. She explained last year the food trucks brought in $30,000 in revenue. She stated Keri Hammon has joined the FOSC Board and the board is currently looking for a treasurer. Bev questioned how much of the profits from the FOSC go back to the Center. Jean stated the FOSC donated $51,000, plus $10,500 for three new treadmills and purchased 16 stools for the woodshop. Jean explained she has reviewed various treadmills and some to include a fan as requested,then she will meet with Ray to discuss options. Bob C. questioned if Sandy would continue as the delegate for FOSC. Sandy explained she would not, as her term on the advisory board was complete and she was unsure how long she would be serving on the FOSC board. Governance Report: No Report—Bob C. commented on how well run the last meeting was. Health Report: Bob K. stated that the month of May was related to sleeping issues and the presenters were from Aurora. He stated there were 26 attendees that stressed their concern with difficulties falling asleep. They were to track their sleep for ten days, half came back with notes and then there was a tour at Aurora in the sleep clinic which 19 attended. He stated it was very informational land several participants have signed up to do the sleep study. He explained Jane proposed to have a support group for those with difficulties sleeping. He stated they are contemplating doing another sleep program next year. He stated they are trying to develop a partnership with Aurora and it gets trying when they don't get the numbers they would like for presentations. Scott announced that it has been a challenge with obtaining attendance for presentations, Bob K. stated staff and volunteers have to be more active in promoting. He explained he would like a list of what each participant interest and then call them when that activity is planned. Bob W stated that sleep disturbances are so common. They are as prevalent as diabetes affecting almost 10%of Americans. Bob K. hats off to Aurora as the presenters take time with each participant after their presentations. Bob W. explained some people are intimidated with hospitals and now they can do the sleep study at home. He announced May 30th and 31s' is Senior Health and Fitness Days. Jean stated how fun it was going to be with polka and cardio drumming. Friends Report: None Chairman's Report: None Manager's Report:Jean passes around the newsletter to all members. Cover page has all three Food Truck Fridays on it. On page two, Medicare Cards should start being sent after June, she encourage all to be careful of scams. Bob W. stated that he had already received his card. Page 11 Listen to your gut; page 12 summer bike rides; page 18 Golden Tones concert on July 15th in the North Building; page 16 Night on the River, will have music, pontoon rides and for purchase pulled pork sandwiches; page 19 Flags, Pies and Baseball on July 13th will include a pie contest and watch the baseball game, all encouraged to bring in old flags; How to cut the clutter on June 26th; Eat and Great on June 28th; page 20, Healthy Hydration Challenge will run from July 2-July 31, participants will be encouraged to chart and track water intake,this is very important in hot weather. Jean explained the County received a grant to train people on a program called Walk with Ease, Jane Wells and Bob Kolinski will be the two trained for 6 weeks. She stated that a piece of strength training equipment sold and there was a purchase of two new weight benches. • Jane explained that the Living Your Best Life book club had come up with the idea for Night on the River. She stated that she was impressed with the minutes that Bobbie completed. Mary agreed and said she does an excellent job on them. • Liz explained some frustration with communication among front desk and FOSC. She stated she had concern for those inquiring about Food Truck Friday volunteer opportunities. She stated there was no contact information left at the front desk. Jean explained the information was in the newsletter and that it will be put in to the communication book as well as posted in the front desk area. She stated anyone looking to volunteer at the Food Truck Friday she could contact Jean Thierman at 920 385 7505 or imthierman@gmail.com. • Cedric questioned how many seniors participate in program usage. Jean will get that information and report to him. • Liz questioned the process of the budget. Jean explained she will provide more detail as the budget proceeds. • Cedric questioned if any changes made on federal level would impact the center. Jean explained that it could impact the County Grant funds received and if Medicare changes it could impact insurance companies and benefits which could then would impact the fitness reimbursement. Scott stated that he would not think if Obama Care was repealed it would affect Medicare. Motion to Adjourn at 4:40 pm Nancy moved to accept the motion. Bev seconded meeting adjourned at 4:40 pm.
