Oshkosh Public Museum
MINUTES
In attendance: Sandy Toland, Susan Maxwell, Steve Cumming, Brad Larson, Gabe Loiacono, Bob
Campbell, Karla Szekeres, Scott Cross, Becky Matzke
Update on events and projects since last meeting—
• Invitation -Armistice Day bell-ringing
• About 60 churches invited to ring bells at 11 am on Sunday, Nov. 11
• Karla reported 3 churches yes so far, 1 no because no external bell.
• Can follow up in June
• Gabe—standees; plans for moving?
o Gabe and Becky will move standees soon. Karla will send most recent locations.
• Becky will talk to Aurora — move one there?
• Sandy will contact Menominee Arena to place one there. Plan to place
one there before h.s. graduations (first weekend in June)
• Brad presented at OPL and will talk to Learning in Retirement group this week. Russell
Horton comes to OPL next Monday—genealogy.
Discussion of future events—
• Oshkosh Public Museum —WWI exhibit,June 17— Oct. 7, 2018. Overview of exhibit
plans; discussion of possible associated events
- Karla — has scheduled 3 presentations for the exhibit— Brad on the 150th, Deb in
August about housewives and families, then Brad on general experiences as part of
member's only event. All 6 pm.
- Exhibit strongly focused on community experiences.
- Steve Cummings will announce these different presentations at the end of Common
Council meetings. Karla will get him info— brochure putting together now with
current events. Will announce two Tuesdays before the event. Also send to Emily in
Oshkosh media.
• UWO/Oshkosh Public Museum —WWI symposium, Oct. 2-4, 2018
• Plans to hold symposium both on campus and here at the OPM. Model it after
Reformation symposium. Evening events at the museum for people who work
during days.
• 2nd and 41h— lots of talks; 3rd maybe also a film.
• H.S. singers perform WWI music one night—Thurs. 10/4, 6 pm — possibly ask Dr.
Julia Chybowski.
• Karla and Brad will coordinate—will this be a free night with museum open to
public?
• WILL DISCUSS WHAT TO DO FOR EVENING EVENTS at June cmt mtg.
• For publicity, fall Muse will go to print mid-August.

• Other events and presentations in 2018?
- Bob reported that WWI aircraft, reenactors will be featured at AirVenture.
- Becky noted that Andrew Schaller reported the Veterans' Honor Wall at Oshkosh
West High School has just added WWI veterans.
• "Armistice Day" commemoration event(s), 2018
• Sunday, Nov. 11, 1918
• Becky will ask the Northwestern to run a story on the armistice in 1918 that
weekend;
• Karla can also check with publisher of the Herald.
• Karla will do press release about bell-ringing on 11/11
• Steve asked if a new photo display could be done for the end of war in first floor
of City Hall—for example, what's happening at Oshkosh High School at end?
Sandy will look in local history stuff at library; Scott could check archives. If know
something within a week, Brad could schedule.
Committee will plan to meet again in June, particularly to discuss scheduling, marketing of
October symposium.
