RE: Ordinance 18-110 modifies parking regulations on Georgia Street
BACKGROUND
This ordinance will remove parking on the west side of Georgia Street, from South Park Avenue to
Osborn Avenue during Council approved special events and on the west side of Georgia Street from
Osborn Avenue to 91 feet north. Traffic Review Advisory Board (TRAB) recommends approval of
both (5-0).
ANALYSIS
Georgia Street, with a 36 feet width, is wide enough for parked vehicles and two way travel, but
vehicles parked near the corner of Osborn Avenue cause congestion, create site restrictions and at
times block access to the fire hydrant.
When vehicles park on both sides on Georgia Street, from South Park Avenue to Osborn Avenue, the
area becomes congested during special events. In prior years OPD has signed this area with
temporary no parking signs during special events. If this ordinance passes, the TRAB agreed this
may be a good location to try out the effectiveness of a no parking sign that would be flipped open
only during special events. It was also suggested "this is a special event" verbiage be added to the
lower portion of these no parking flip down signs.
FISCAL IMPACT
The fiscal impact of this ordinance is the cost to make and install signage. The cost would come out
of the 2018 Sign Department operational budget.
RECOMMENDATION
I recommend that the Common Council approve this ordinance to restrict parking on Georgia Street
in Section 27A-11 of the Municipal Code pertaining to parking regulations on designated streets and
alleys.

Jim Collins
Transportation Director
