ACANTHUS AWARD CRITERIA
Adopted October 12, 1983
The Acanthus Awards should further the goals of historic preservation by identifying,
evaluating and protecting the City’s cultural resources.
The Awards should call attention to the restoration or preservation of architectural
elements and features as part of the cultural, economic, social or historic heritage of the
City. Preservation criteria should be the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for
Rehabilitation.
The awards should seek to create a broad general awareness of the community’s
architectural heritage by drawing upon the knowledge of the public in awards’ selection.
The awards should allow for intensive research and study of each nomination by
subcommittee members, providing an introduction to restoration/preservation standards
as determined by the Secretary of the Interior.
Acanthus Awards may be made for commercial, residential or innovative reuse of sites
where renovation/restoration has retained the historic identity and respected the historic
fabric of the structure. Careful maintenance of historic structures may be eligible for
award preservation as the best in preservation.
The yearly awards are normally to be conferred for projects completed within the past
two years.
Citations should specify exterior, interior or both and should document both the
significance of the site and the efforts and methods expended in its preservation.
Awards are not mandatory in each category every year.
