RE: 2017 Acanthus Historic Preservation Awards
BACKGROUND
Since 1981, the City of Oshkosh Landmarks Commission has honored members of the
community that have made important contributions to local historic preservation. A goal of the
Acanthus Awards is to further historic preservation by identifying, evaluating and protecting
the City's cultural resources by calling attention to the cultural, economic, social or historic
heritage of our City. Past recipients have ranged from organizations to property owners as well
as individuals involved in activities that have enhanced our historic and cultural resources.
The City of Oshkosh Landmarks Commission has chosen two entities to receive the annual City
of Oshkosh Acanthus Historic Preservation Award for 2017.
1. Devooght House and Building Movers
"Retention and Preservation Activities of the Historic Louis Schriber House -moving the
house from its previous location at 1428 Algoma Boulevard to its present location at the
corner of Algoma Boulevard and Arboretum Drive."
For setting a precedent by taking ownership of a William Waters -designed house, lifting
and transporting the 200 ton brick house, preserving the house from demolition, and
ensuring its continued presence in the community as an historical structure.
2. Jeremy and Lori Herzog
"Facade Rehabilitation of the Residence at 310 Waugoo Avenue"
For appropriate maintenance efforts and painting of the residence located near the
Washington Avenue Neoclassical Historic District and setting an example to other
owners of historic properties in our community.
