HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutesMINUTES SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY BOARD APRIL 3. 2017 PRESENT – Margy Davey, Lurton Blassingame, Jason Kalmbach, Michelle Bogden Muetzel, Robert Turner, Tom Pech Jr., Adam Maslowski, Steve Cummings, Lori Palmeri, Steve Herman, Ben Stepanek, Mark Rohloff EXCUSED – Janet Scalpone, Ryan Hamann STAFF – Elizabeth Williams (Planner), Steven Wiley (Assistant Planner) CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. and a quorum was declared present. PUBLIC COMMENT No public comment was received. APPROVAL OF MINUTES, MARCH 6, 2017 Motion by Mr. Blassingame and second by Mr. Pech to approve minutes as written. Motion carried (6-0). STUDENT PRESENTATIONS: UW OSHKOSH ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES SENIOR SEMINAR PROJECT Professor Laura Hartman introduced her Environmental Studies class, who were at the meeting to give presentations on their senior seminar projects. The projects focused on the City of Oshkosh and how the city could work with the University to advance sustainable efforts in Oshkosh. Students presented findings in eight (8) sections: Introduction Stakeholder Insights What Oshkosh has done well Water Sector Transportation Sector Land Use Principles Energy Use Sector Conclusion The project focused on advancing the Climate Action Plan and explained the benefits of pursuing initiatives. Students presented data and facts from various sources. After the presentation discussion between Council Members / SAB members and students ensued. Council Members and SAB members asked questions and gave the students input regarding areas of the research to further advance for the final report. Council Member Palmeri asked if the SAB would remain a continuing resource for the students as they finish their seminar project. Chair Davey said that the board would remain available for assistance to the students. UPDATES: 1.) WI Green Tier Legacy Communities Program Mr. Wiley presented an update on the status of Oshkosh joining the WI Green Tier Legacy Communities Program. The resolution required for the city to join the program was passed by Common Council at the March 28th Council meeting. The next step was for city staff and the SAB to complete the Sustainability Scoresheet which establishes a baseline for Oshkosh’s performance in sustainable initiatives. Staff would then forward the completed scoresheet to the SAB for consideration and approval before submitting the scoresheet to the Department of Natural Resources. 2.) Sustainable Oshkosh Website Mr. Wiley presented an update on the status of revising the Sustainable Oshkosh website. Planning staff forwarded SAB edits / revisions up to city IT staff after the March 6th meeting. The Board member page on the website was updated but the Sustainable Oshkosh and Resources pages currently awaited updates. 3.) Oshkosh Farmers Market Chair Davey presented an update on the Farmers Market for 2017 and reminded SAB members who volunteered at the market of the dates. 4.) Urban Beekeeping Ordinance Ms. Williams presented an update on the Urban Beekeeping Ordinance. The first reading of the ordinance occurred on the March 28th Council agenda. Staff was continuing to make edits to the ordinance. Mr. Kalmbach asked about the provision regarding a consent requirement for beekeeping from surrounding property owners. Ms. Williams stated that this requirement was not in the ordinance. 5.) Project CURB Chair Davey mentioned Project CURB and April 27th as an important upcoming date since it is the kick off for the initiative at the Webster Stanley Auditorium. AGENDA ITEMS FOR FUTURE MEETING The items discussed for the upcoming May 1st meeting include a presentation on the Shoreland Restoration project that Ms. Bogden Muetzel will give. NEXT MEETING, MONDAY MAY 1, 2017 Chair Davey reminded the Board of the next meeting. ADJOURN Motion by Mr. Pech and seconded by Ms. Bogden Muetzel to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried (6-0).
