RE: Purchase of Robotic Total Station
The Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works currently utilizes Trimble total stations and data
collectors to survey and stake out projects. One of the units has reached the end of its useful life.
Staff contacted Seiler Instruments, who is the only authorized sales representative in this area, to get a quote on
a replacement unit. The replacement unit is a Trimble ST The Trimble S7 was chosen because staff is familiar
with the use of this brand and because of compatibility with existing equipment. The new S7 total station will
provide additional functionality, including the ability for single -person survey operations. Single -person
operation will allow staff to be more efficient with data collection. The new unit will also include scanning
capabilities, which will aid in improving the survey of stockpiles. The cost of the new total station is $31,000.
The 2017 Engineering Division Operating Budget includes $30,000 for this purchase. The remaining funds will
come from other budgets within the Engineering Operating Budget.
Section 12-11 of the Municipal Code of the City of Oshkosh provides that material purchases, when standardization
or compatibility is the overriding consideration, may be approved by the City Manager without the use of
formal, sealed quotes. In accordance with Section 12-11 of the Municipal Code, I am hereby submitting this
report regarding this purchase.
