Charge from the Sustainability Advisory Board
The students of ES 490, Senior Seminar, are charged with the following:
- Present a case to the Common Council on why the City of Oshkosh needs to develop a
Climate Action Plan.
- There is a completed Greenhouse Gas Emissions Analysis for the City of Oshkosh
(2013). This is the first step. Greenhouse Gas Emission reduction targets have been
drafted by the City of Oshkosh Sustainability Advisory Board (2016). The next steps
include, according to ICLEI (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives):
adopting reduction targets, developing a climate action plan, implementing the plan,
monitoring progress and reporting results.
- We recommend that you look at similar cities to see what steps they have taken toward
climate action, and what the results are.
- We recommend that you take into consideration the local political situation (who the
councilors are, when the election is) as you plan to make your case.
- We are open to the idea that the next steps toward a climate action plan might be
rephrased or reframed as energy efficiency, community resilience, and/or public health
measures, if these are more likely to be persuasive to your audience.
We expect the following deliverables:
- A progress report with the Sustainability Advisory Board on April 3
- A workshop with the members of the Common Council on April 25
- A written report summarizing the class’s findings and making the case in writing
