MEMORANDUM
TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the Common Council
FROM: Elizabeth Williams, Associate Planner
DATE: August 4, 2016
RE: Authorize Sponsorship of "Live Green Event" on Saturday, September 10, 2016
BACKGROUND
In early June, 2016, Community Development Department staff was approach by Silver Star Brand's
Green Team regarding the opportunity to co- sponsor a sustainability event in Oshkosh. Since that time,
Planning staff and Chair of the Sustainability Advisory Board have been working very closely with
members of the Green Team to refine the scope of the event.
ANALYSIS
The Community Development Department is proposing to collaborate with Silver Star Brands to host
the first "Live Green Event ", scheduled for Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
at the Leach Amphitheater. The event would be open to the public and proposed activities would
include live music, kids games, local food, organic produce, eco- friendly products, building rain
barrels, and upcycled artwork made by local artists from repurposed goods. The event will also offer
participants educational materials on various community resources including recycling, yard waste
disposal, storm water management and why small changes in behavior are important to the overall
wellbeing of the community and environment.
The proposed "Live Green Event" will provide an opportunity for the City of Oshkosh to collaborate
with an outside organization to promote sustainability in the community and further recommendations
identified within the City's Sustainability Plan, which was approved by the Common Council on May
22, 2012.
FISCAL IMPACT
No city funds are anticipated to be expended on this event; however, the Planning Services Division
will provide staff support and the Leach Amphitheater will be rented for a reduced fee. Additionally,
Oshkosh residents may be eligible for a credit on their storm water fee, upon successful installation of
the rain barrel and application approval through the Department of Public Works. The event will be
fully funded by additional community sponsors and Silver Star Brands.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends approval to authorize sponsorship of the "Live Green Event" on September 10, 2016.
