HomeMy WebLinkAbout MinutesMINUTES SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY BOARD FEBRUARY 1, 2016 PRESENT: Margy Davey, Nikki Stoll, Michelle Bogden Muetzel, Jan Scalpone, Samara Hamzé and Kim Biedermann EXCUSED: Tom Pech STAFF: Elizabeth Williams, Associate Planner CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 6:02 pm and a quorum was declared present. PUBLIC COMMENT No public comment was received. APPROVE MINUTES FROM AUGUST 3RD MEETING Motion by Ms. Hamzé and second by Ms. Biedermann to approve minutes as written. Motion carried 5-0. 2016 BIRD CITY RENEWAL & BIRD FEST EVENT Ms. Davey notified members that planning for the 2016 Bird Fest event is underway. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 7th from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Menominee Park. Additional evening activities will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Gallery Walk in Downtown Oshkosh. Ms. Williams explained that the City has been recognized as a Bird City since 2010. In 2012, the City received “High Flyer” status. In order to be recognized as a “High Flyer”, communities must meet a minimum of 12 out of 39 criteria established by Bird City Wisconsin. Oshkosh met 20 of the 39 criteria within their renewal application and it is anticipated that Oshkosh will receive “High Flyer” status again in 2016. SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATE & SCHEDULING EDUCATION & OUTREACH Ms. Biedermann presented a draft informational brochure on impervious surfaces. Ms. Stoll suggested the brochure include links to additional resources that might be helpful for homeowners. Ms. Biedermann requested additional feedback on the brochure be sent via email and a final draft should be ready to be reviewed at the next meeting. Ms. Bogden Muetzel joined the meeting at 6:08 pm. Ms. Williams reminded members of an upcoming presentation with UW-Oshkosh Environmental Studies students planned for Thursday, February 11th at City Hall in room 404. Students will be working with staff to complete projects that further implementation of various aspects of the Oshkosh Sustainability Plan. Ms. Hamzé updated members on UW-Oshkosh’s Earth Week activities that are currently being planned for April. Additional information would be provided once it became available. 2 | February 1, 2016 Sustainability Advisory Board Minutes GOVERNMENT ACTION Ms. Williams explained recent conversations with UW-Oshkosh regarding a presentation for City staff which would be focused on sustainability efforts on campus. It was agreed that prioritization of this presentation would be considered during the 2016 goal setting discussion during the work session. ICLEI Ms. Williams noted Kathy Thunes from East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission would provide additional information on the status of the report during the work session. NEXT MEETING MONDAY, MARCH 7TH. Chair Davey reminded the Board of the next meeting. Ms. Hamzé suggested inviting representatives from Shop Local to an upcoming meeting to give an update on their current efforts. Ms. Williams requested contact information to coordinate the presentation with Shop Local representatives. ADJOURN Motion by Ms. Biedermann and second by Ms. Stoll to adjourn the meeting.
