FIRE SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY
CADET/FIREFIGHTER PROGRAM
� ,
O�bjectives: In conjunction with the City of Oshkosh, and the
Oshkosh Fire Department, provide training and ex-
perience for selected students enrolled in the Fire
Science Technology Program at Fox Valley Technical
Institute, and provide a more effective screening
process for the Oshkosh Fire Department in the hiring
of personnel.
1. To allow the student a period of learning and in-
sight into firefighting operations and fire depart-
ment organization and procedures.
2. To allow the Oshkosh Fire Department the opportunity
to upgrade the quality of new personnel entering
the department.
Qualifications for Participation:
The student will be selected for the program by mutual
approval of the Program Head of Fire Science Technology
at F.V.T.I., the Chief of the Oshkosh Fire Department,
and the Personnel Director of the City of Oshkosh.
1. The student will have completed 30 academic credits
in the Associate Degree Program. '
2. The student must have, and maintain, a 3.0 grade
point average in the Fire Science Technology Program.
3. The student will have completed the Basic Fireman-
ship course offered by the Fire Servi�e Training
Program at F.V.T.I. with a grade of S.
4. The student shazl have 20 hours of training in
other specialized courses such as: Flammable
Liquids and Structural Burns.
5. The student must be able to meet all physical
requirements as specified by the Oshkosh Personnel
Director; and be willing to tal<e a physical exami-
nation, paid for by the City of Oshkosh, and con-
ducted by a City designated physician.

Cadet/FF Program - 2
The student will work the 56 hour work week; 4 hours
on duty--48 hours off duty. Because of school
policies, he will be given: two weeks off during
the Christmas season; one week off during the Easter
season; and Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday days off.
The student will work under the direction of the
Oshkosh Fire Chief and other departmental officers
in conjunction with the Program Head of Fire Science
Technology at F.V.T.I.
The student will perform all firefighting duties and
responsibilities as required by the Oshkosh Fire
Department, after mutual consent is granted by the
Fire Chief and Fire Science Technology Program Head. �
The student shall attend all training sessions as �
scheduled by the Oshkosh Fire Department while on
duty.
The student will abide by all rules, regulations and
procedures as established for the Oshkosh Fire Dept.
The student will abide all rules, regulations, and
procedures as established by the Fox Valley Technical
Institute.
The student will acquire a minimum of 12 credits pe�
semester while in the program.

If a student leaves the cadet program because of �
employment or for any other reason, he will be re- !
placed by another Fire Science student who can meet
the qualifications, and his time in the program be-
gins on the date of his selection.
Cadet/Firefighters are to serve in the program for
a one (1) calendar year time span. (Preferably from
June to June.)
Each student will�be evaluated by the Oshkosh Fire I
Chief and the Program Head of Fire Science Tech-
nology at F.V.T.I. The evaluation will consist of �
a quarterly report of the student by the Chief to '
the Program Head, and a monthly report on the student �
by the Program Head to the Chief. " �
Provisions to Students:
The City of Oshkosh shall provide each student with:
1. Permanent bed to be used on and off-duty.
2. Bedding, towels, wash cloths, etc.
3. Locker for personalarticles and clothing.
4. Meals for on and off-duty, in the Fire Station.
5. Work uniforms as well as firefighting turn-out gear
which is all the property of the department, and
must be returned.
6. Parking for private vehicles.

7. Copy of the Oshkosh Fire Department's rules and
Procedures.
8. Injuries to be covered under Workmen's Compensation.
Additional Rules:
1. Beds shall be neatly made each morning. When using
facilities such as kitchen, complete cleaning will
be required. �
2. Students will maintain good personal hygiene habits
and grooming. Beards are not allowed and hair
length shall conform to regulations.

Any student who is in violation of rules and regulations
or procedures or, in the Fire Chief's opinion, does not
meet the needs, will be dropped from the program by the
Fire Chief. Students may be dropped at any time upon the
judgement of the F.V.T.I. Fire Service Program.
