Thc following outline is a syr,opsis of the recently enacted Juvenile Caw
�evision of Cha ter 48 of the Idisconsin Sta[utes. This law eG-comes e��ctive
• s�x months a te�blication. Publication date vas hiay 9, 1918. Effective
datc 1s tlovembcr 9, 1970.
I. Nis. Statutes - Chap. 49 - Cited as "The Chlldrens Code".
A. Created to provide udicial and other procedures
through ti•�hich children an others are assured fair
hearSngs and yet protecting the public safety.
B. Definitions:
1. "Adult" means persons 18 yrs. ar older. �
• 2. "Child" means person .less than 18 ycars or older.
3. "Court" when used witliout further qualifications
' means the Court. Assigr-�d to exercise jurisdiction
under this chapter.
4. "Judge" if used �aithout further qualificaCions
means the Judge of the Court. Assigned to exercise
• jurisdiction under this chapter.
5. "Secure Detention" means locked facility approved
by the Department of Heal'th and Social Ser��ices under
46.16.
6. "Trial" means fact-finding hearing to determine
jurisdicticn.
