All are equally important and serve a useful purpose. Health screening is an individual confidential health er,amination rrith a registered nurse. Present screening tests include: health, nutrition, a.^.d medication assessmeat an3 education; blood pressure; her*_ and lung auscultation; pulse; breast examination (optional) and use of breast model from the Asnerican Cancer Society; uri^alysis for nitrates, protein, and glucose; capillary blood suqar; hematocrit (for an2mia); Intradermal tuberculosis skin testing (optional); and fiemoccu.lt II slide for colorectal cancer screening. Appropriate referrals are made to a physician or other agency; the R.N. follows-up the referrals to verify that the health need has received adequate attention. The health screenings are by appointment, for any older zdult in the Oshkosh Area_ They are offered at the Oshkosh Seniors Center and at various mobile sites,.including older adult apartment complexes, churches, and nutrition sites_ Brochures on this service, newspaper articles, press releases, and word of mouth all promote the screenings and the other health pro- grams listed below. We hope this year to also provide transportation to those older adults unable to get to a site. We are extremely pleased with the results of this service, including early diagnosis of several cancer cases and severe anemic and diabetic problems. ' Time is set aside each week for individual health counselling, rechecks of abnormal screening tests, and o£fering time and advice to older adults caho have'a particular health concern. blany times they need help understanding a diet prescribed, a new medication, etc. The nurse has time to help each out on an individual basis. Also, this time is used for clients who have elevated blood pressures, and their physicians have requested the RN to closely monitor it. By hecking itfrequerit:l.y;: severe hypertension is controlled before a strohe or heart attack occurs, and the client's medical costs are also decreased. Health Education programs continue to be a valuable source of information to older adults. Monthly public Blood Pressure programs served almost 900 seniors last year. Health programs, such as movies on cancer, glaucoma, first aid, heart problems, alcoholism, etc. are shown_ Guest speakers talk on everything from health care to dental needs and hearing aids. Mass detection programs also occur, such as blood sugar screen- ings and glaucoma screenings_ Monthly health articles appear in the newsletter, covering a variety of topics. :New health programs are always being developed, including health ioorkshops and even a"Salk-a-Thon" for Seniors (to promote physical fitness). Included in "Health Education" are two necv support qroups for (1) seniors with diaUetes, (2) those 4rith heart disease. An RN conducts each group;which meet monthly_ Our goal is to increase participation in these groups and raise older adults understanding of their disease. Hopefully, these groups will help them prevent early complications and deatn from their disease process, and help them cope in today's world. ""C2@ ::°- J^2 3nr °.^.;1°_^ Ci _,'.;i?SCi`.f wC!'_.:^ iS lor^ Soeakinq at various older adult groups, distributing health program '_ brochures to area churches, neighborhood centecs and Senior Centers, articles in local newspapers and public service radio announceraents.
