Mr. Syring:
John Papenfus, our Sturctural Engineer, has inspected the
footing conditions under the brick piers supporting the
house floor. He has determined that the stone footings
are neither thick enough nor large enough to support the
new concrete floor system.
Enclosed are three copies of our Sheet No. A-131 dated
4 January 1984 showing numbered brick piers.
Please submit a proposal for removing piers and footings
as shown and providing new footings and piers:
1. Footings shall be 3'-6" square x 12" deep with
5 No. 4 reinforcing rods each way.
2. Piers shall be 16" x 16" concrete filled concrete
chimney block piers reinforced with 4 No. 6 vertical
reinforcing rods with No. 3 ties. Provide dowels
into footings. At your option, piers may be formed
concrete rather than concrete block.

We are uncomfortable about supporting the new reinforced concrete
floor system on these footings, and recommend that the existing
brick piers ad stone footings be replaced with new footings and
columns, using the same design as those shown on Sheet S1. We
suggest getting a cost of removal and replacement from the
General Contractor on a per column basis.
In addition, I looked at the start of the excavation for the
elevator pit which was filled with water and had a thin layer of
ice on the surface. The soil appeared to be very soft, but we
preEer to see what it looks like after they have excavated to
footing level. You should examine it at that time. Meanwhile,
if you could send me a copy of the boring log and the soils
report for the parking structure across the street, we mav be
able to get some information about the foundation materials from
that.
Very truly yours,

This is to document the situation relntive to the
discovered dug well located in the northwest corner of
the new elevator pit.
The well is approximately 2'-0" round and lined with
stones. Depth of the well has not been determined.
Before the existing basement floor was placed, the
well had been filled with cinders and bricks. Those
materials have now been removed to a level about 2'-0"
below the bottom of the new elevator pit floor slab.
Clarence Lade, Marino Construction, has been instructed
to proceed with the pit construction, to fill the well
to its current excavated level with concrete and to
place the sump basin in its originally designed
location - over the well.
It appears that about 3 cubic feet of extra concrete is
required.
