PURPOSE: HONORARY RECOGNITION OF CARL E. STEIGER
INITIATED BY: CITY ADMINISTRATION
WHEREAS, Carl E. Steiger, for over 60 years, has set an inspiring
example for the citizens of Oshkosh as an outstanding industrial
leader who recognized and accepted his civic responsibilities; and
WHEREAS, Carl E. Steiger has served the Episcopal Diocese of Fond
du Lac and Oshkosh's Trinity Episcopal Church for many years as a
vestry man, senior warden, and trustee; and
WHEREAS, Carl E. Steiger served as a First Lieutenant in the
United States Army during World War I, 1917-18; and
WHEREAS, Carl E. Steiger was instrumental in the growth of the
Deltox Rug Company as General Manager, President and Chairman of the
Board; served as President of the Oshkosh Pure Ice Company and Steiger
Rathke Development Company; served on the Board of Directors of
Wisconsin National Life Insurance Company and Oshkosh National Bank;
served as an advisor to the President of North Central Airlines; aided
many other area business organizations; served as an incorporator and
board member of Western State Bank, chartered October 11, 1965; and
WHEREAS, Carl E. Steiger for 30 years has been on the Mercy
Medical Center's Board of Directors and served as President and
Chairman; served as a Regent on the University of Wisconsin Board of
Regents and served as its President for two years; and on the
University of Wisconsin-Madison Foundations; served as a founding
member of the Oshkosh Foundation and the UW-0 Foundation; a former
president of the Oshkosh Community Chest; a member of the Power Boat
Club; the Oshkosh Country Club, Past Commodore of the Oshkosh Yacht
Club and a past winner of the famed Felker Cup; Trustee, Paine Art
Center and Arboretum; and
WHEREAS, Carl E. Steiger has been an active, life-long, member of
the Republican Party and held national, state and local leadership
roles; attended many national conventions; served as a member of the
Electoral College for Wisconsin; and
WHEREAS, Carl E. Steiger served the City of Oshkosh as a member
of the Police and Fire Commission and twice as a member of the Common
Council; was active as a member of Associated Industries and Chamber

of Commerce and served on its Board of Directors; was awarded the
Outstanding Community Citizen Award by the Oshkosh Junior Chamber of
Commerce; and Honorary Chairman for the 51.5 Million capital fund
dzive for the Oshkosh Community YMCA;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City
of Oshkosh that the week of January 27, 1985, is hereby designated
"Carl E. Steiger Week" in the City of Oshkosh and Carl E. Steiger is
designated as the City's official "Mr. Oshkosh" and that he be
presented with a key to the City.
