Oshkosh, WI 54902 (920) 232-5300 (920) 232-5307 FAX ADVISORY BOARD OF THE OSHKOSH SENIORS CENTER MEETING MINUTES JANUARY 26, 2015 PRESENT: Cynthia Thorpe, Judy Smith, Vicki Leichtfuss, Barbara Goldthwaite, Marlene Mielke, Xandy Kloeckl, Roberta Messer, Mary Wiedenmeier, Sandy Noe, Gary Konrad, John Hauser, Ann Marie Kosek (Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center Representative). EXCUSED: Dale Sonnenberg, Sue Gullickson ABSENT: STAFF: Mark Ziemer, Senior Services Manager; Kathy Snell, Lead Office Coordinator FACILITATOR: Sue Nietzel, UWO Business Success Center Consultant Meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. Mark introduced new staff members, Laura Schwartzburg and Jody LaPlante. Cynthia introduced new board member, Marlene Mielke and the Facilitator for today’s activities, Sue Nietzel. Below are the notes taken from the meeting activities. MISSION Sue reaffirmed the Oshkosh Seniors Center’s mission. To enrich the quality of life for adults 50 and over. She stated today we would be working on a strategic direction for the Advisory Board and she would leave us with a framework to accomplish the work for an action plan. We should also then in 6 months report back to the Community Foundation letting them know what we have accomplished from our Strategic Planning Session. Sue did state she felt the mission statement was missing a How and Why aspect. However, stated if the group were in consensus that we knew what these were it was good. VISIONING This should be a statement of what success will look like. Should push the organization to its outer limits and will show how the mission statement is being accomplished. A group exercise was done to determine things the group would like to incorporate in the vision statement. (Below are the ideas that the board members would like to incorporate into a vision statement. The items with an * are those that were voted on and approved to be used to create the vision statement.)  7 Dimensions of Wellness Improve access to all resources for  seniors Increasing synergy between OSC  and FOSC Sense of wellness  Enable Seniors to give back Strong connection to community  Bring people together Financial viability  Meet needs of large diverse group Affordability  Healthy Aging * Sense of purpose for participants  Fingers on pulse of needs and Partnerships with community services organizations/groups *  Improve transportation for seniors Friendly and safe * 1  Viable options for 50-60 groups * It was determined to have a subcommittee work on pulling a vision statement together from our top few items (*). The statement will be brought to the next Advisory Board meeting for review and approval. Those working on the committee will include: Vicki, Marlene, Cynthia, Sandy, Ann Marie and Kathy. VALUES This exercise was done to determine the values the members felt were important to the Advisory Board. The items with an * are the top 5 values the board agreed on.  Equality of seniors Supportive  Integration of others Quality *  Resource Trust  Providing leadership Value older adult contributions *  Respectful * Informative  Affordable * Collaborative  Accessible Physical wellbeing  Promoting independence, self Facility  confidence Encouragement   Inclusion * Transparent  Variety  Innovative Top values may also be used in the vision statement. SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) This exercise was divided out into categories. We then used the SWOT items to determine our FOCUS (Strategic Priorities – listed below). Items with an * are those that the group felt would / should be the FOCUS for the Advisory Board over the next 1-2 years. (Please see attachments for the SWOT exercises.)  Change Center Perception  Improve financial situation  Create public awareness campaign  Communicate / Educate / Advocate with wider constituency and city officials *  Establish steady revenue stream  Target market 50-60 age group  Build Community Partners *  Civic Engagement for Seniors (Leadership Oshkosh for older adults) TO DO’s  Create a document with the Mission / Vision / Values/ and 2015 – 2017 Strategic Priorities Listed  Make sure we have concise description of the priorities Strategic Direction #1 : o Strategic Direction #2: o  Create and Action Plan WHAT ACTION will be taken / by WHO / by WHEN o  Create a report for the Community Foundation describing the things that have been accomplished and the actions that are being worked on. 2
