PURPOSE: PROCLAIM EARTH DAY 1990
INITIATED BY: MAYOR MATHER & COMMON COUNCIL
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT ADVISORY BOARD RECOMMENDATION: Approved, 7-0
WHEREAS, almost 20 years ago, millions joined together on
the first Earth Day to express an unprecedented concern for the
environment, and their collective action resulted in the passage
of sweeping laws to protect air, water and land; and
WHEREAS, the residents and city government of the City of
Oshkosh have long supported environmental protection and natural
resource management programs and policies; and
WHEREAS, public concern about protecting the Earth is
rapidly increasing as new scientific information becomes
available about envrionmental threats such as global warming,
ozone depletion, acid rain, air pollution, tropical
deforestation, ocean pollution, toxic and nuclear waste disposal,
and desertification; and
WHEREAS, citizens and business, government and civic leaders
recognize that environmental protection and resource conservation
are essential requisites to, and the foundation of, sustained
prosperity and econominc development; and
WHEREAS, communities, like the City of Oshkosh, have many
critical environmental responsibilities which include land use
planning, management of transportation systems, recycling and
resource recovery, and solid and liquid waste management; and
WHEREAS, citizens and their governments must again renew
their commitment to meet the global environmental challenge and
stand together with others throughout the world for a day of
collective action to declare our shared resolve to be
environmentally sensitive and responsible; and
WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 is not just a national call, but an
international call to action for all citizens to join in a
renewed global effort to protect and preserve our environment;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the
City of Oshkosh that April 22, 1990, is hereby proclaimed "Earth
Day 1990" in the City of Oshkosh, and all residents of the City
are called to participate in activites celebrating Earth Day 1990
and to adopt environmentally sound practices for all days to
come to protect and preserve the world around us.
