Patek, Director of Public Works 1 c-P DATE: October 3, 2013 RE: Award Bid for Public Works Contract No. 13-27 Concrete and Asphalt Crushing Michels Corporation/($34,020) BACKGROUND The purpose of this project is to crush concrete and asphalt pavement into aggregate to be used as base material for the new Public Works Field Operations facility. This material has been salvaged from various street reconstruction or building demolition projects. This salvaged material is currently stored at the Street Division bulk storage yard located on West Fernau Avenue. ANALYSIS Engineering staff reviewed three bids. The low bid was received from Michels Corporation of Brownsville, Wisconsin. The total bid is $34,020. The price to crush this material is $3.24 per ton. As a comparison, the City pays $7.25 per ton to Michels Materials for new, crushed limestone material (3/4" and 1W sizes) as part of the 2013 Road Materials Bid. As part of the bid for the Field Operations Facility Project, Miron Construction is responsible for hauling this crushed material to the Witzel Avenue site. FISCAL IMPACT Funding for the project is available with the Field Operations Project funding in the Property Improvements Section of the Capital Improvement Program. RECOMMENDATIONS I recommend award to the low bidder, Michels Corporation, in the amount of$34,020. Approved: Mark A.
