RE: Landscape Design Services
The museum received proposals for landscape design services from two well- qualified
firms, Ken Saiki Design, Inc. and Schaefer Land Design, for the redesign of the north and
east museum grounds. Both firms met all the requirements of the Request for Proposal,
both participated in the pre -bid walkthrough, and both were within the budgeted amount
of $45,000.
The proposals were reviewed by Mike Breza, museum board president Eugene Winkler,
and me. Selection was challenging because each firm brought unique skills and experience
to the project. However, the selection of Schaefer Land Design was unanimous. Their
proposal was $38,060, plus $2,500 for a site survey, for a total of $40,560.
Our selection of Schaefer was based on their work on similar projects, including their work
at the Green Bay Botanical Gardens and the Paine Art Center. Their creative ideas seem to
mesh well with our goal of making the grounds an integral part of the museum visit. As
mentioned at this week's staff meeting, one example that we've put forward is to transfer
the Spanish American War Hiker Monument to the museum grounds. We believe the
monument could make an impressive focal point, and Schaefer is willing to work with us
on that idea. Finally, Schaefer's proposal acknowledged that the museum does not have
the staff to maintain complex planting designs, and will design accordingly.
I expect that work will begin within a week to ten days. We've set a firm, ambitious
schedule to complete the design phase by late July, setting the stage for the first phases of
implementation in 2013, pending funding.
