CALL TO ORDER
Mr. Clark called the meeting to order at 3:05 pm and a quorum was declared present.
ACANTHUS AWARD(S) DETERMINATION
The discussion begun with Mr. Buck stating that the goal of this special meeting was to determine
the Acanthus Award recipients for 2012 as well as to determine a new design for the award
certificate as staff does not have a reproducible one.
Mr. Buck explained the packet item, which is a list of the Acanthus Award winners from its
inception in 1981 to 2011. He then said that he wanted to share some possible candidates including:
thth
Lakeview Cemetery Mausoleum; CR Meyer; the Burns Townhomes on 8 & 9 Avenues;
Downtown Façade Program; Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway initiative; Canadian National
Railroad bridge; Paine Gardens and Art Center carriage house addition; and the Community Mural
Project. General discussion took place regarding the mausoleum at Lakeview and it was thought
that the chapel might be a more fitting candidate but the Commission was unsure of its state. There
was discussion that several of the suggested awardees would be more appropriate for 2013 as they
were not completed or had a significant anniversary date next year. Mr. Cummings suggested
Castle-Pierce as the oldest family owned and operated business. Mr. Arnold nominated Brian
Wood and Anthony Frommelt for their interior work on the Morgan House. Mr. Clark felt both of
the suggestions were good but also felt the mural was a great candidate as it embodies the history of
Oshkosh in an artistic and community positive way. Ms. Brabender Mattox stated that Leif Larson
drew and coordinated the creation of the mural itself but that Rich Norenberg did a lot of the
institutional work and organizing to make it happen and she felt that both need to be recognized
with awards. Mr. Buck responded that two copies can be made for the same award.
Ms. Brabender Mattox motioned that three awards be granted in 2012 including:
1.Community Mural: Artist Interpretation of Oshkosh’s History (Leif Larson & Rich
Norenberg)
2.John Rodgers Morgan House: Interior Restoration Efforts (Brian Wood & Anthony
Frommelt)
3.Castle-Pierce: Oldest Family Owned & Operated Business in Oshkosh (Thomas Castle)
The motion was seconded by Mr. Arnold. Motion carried 6-0.
Mr. Buck presented four alternatives of the Acanthus Award certificate. He stated that three of
them had been created by the Planning Intern Lizzy Schultz as quick alternatives to the existing,
which was also included. Mr. Buck said color selection is open as well but the primary blue-green-

red-grey is usually the best as far as reproduction. Mr. Hughes suggested that the Landmarks Logo
be used in place of the acanthus leaf. Ms. Brabender Mattox stated that it would be strange to have
an “acanthus award” without the leaf for which the award was named. Mr. Arnold asked why that
was chosen to begin with and Mr. Clark and Ms. Heikel responded that it is an architectural element
found in the detail of many structures throughout the world and is closely related to historic
preservation. It was determined the acanthus leaf motif would continue to be used and voting in
regard to color and design options took place as summarized in the following tables:
Design
Original Door New Leaf Column
0 2 3 1
Color
Grey Green Blue Red
0 0 5 1
It was motioned by Ms. Heikel that the new acanthus leaf design in blue would be used with the
condition that lower case letters be used and that spacing be consistent throughout the document.
Motion was seconded by Mr. Hughes. Motion carried 6-0.
ADJOURNMENT
Motion to adjourn at 4:44 pm was made by Mr. Cummings and seconded by Ms. Heikel. Motion
carried 6-0.
Respectfully Submitted,
David Buck
