Michigan Ave. Chicago, I11. 60601 Attn: Mr. Ray Best RE: 350 S. Koeller St. Midas Muffler Shop Furnace room ceiling Dear Mr. Best: Reference is made to your letter of January 23, 1984 and to Mr. Millers letter of January 30, 1984. It is evident from Mr. Millers letter that the furnace room ceiling is not constructed according to U.L. Design No. L511. The design that was used, namely two layers of 5/8" sheetrock separated by a channel, does not to my knowledge form a rated 2 -hour assembly. I also call attention to the letter of December 23, 1983 by Plan Examiner James Smith; " You are also reminded that these double "C" joists are not approved as a substitute for wood framing required for the 2 -hour ceiling assembly of the mechanical equipment room." I have spoken to Mr. Smith personally and he informs me that the assembly as built, even with the two layers of sheetrock, is not approved by him as a rated 2 -hour assembly, Due to the above circumstances we feel we have no good choice but to withold final approval of the building until we receive written documentation that the furnace room ceiling as constructed meets state requirements. If I can be of assistance, please call me at 236 -5051, during the hours of 8:00 -9:00 a.m. or 1 :00 -2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sincerely, JAMES DALLMAN Asst.
