Greetings:
A recent inspection of various convenience store and gasoline service station locations has shown that
without benefit of the issuance of a City of Oshkosh Building Permit, a number of businesses have
placed banners, spring board signs, and other types of signage on their properties, which may not be in
compliance with City Zoning Ordinance requirements.
In an attempt to deal with this situation, the Department is forwarding communications to convenience
stores and gasoline service stations to provide information as to the type of signage that is permitted.
Basically, with the issuance of a building permit, a particular location could potentially have ground
signs, wall signs, projecting signs, message center signs, or a mix of these types of signs.
Temporary/portable signs, such as those which are utilized to advertise the sale of soft drinks or
tobacco products are not permitted, and in many cases it is not the business that may be placing the
signage/banners on the exterior of the premises, but vendors. Each business should inform vendors of
the Zoning Ordinance requirements and restrict the placement of such signage, per Ordinance
requirements.
In the coming months, the Department will again be reviewing the status of compliance, and locations
that are in violation will receive notifications in this regard.
In the meantime, we would ask for your cooperation in this regard. If your business has any questions
relative to the type of signage permitted under the Zoning Ordinance, please feel free to contact me at
(414) 236 -5059 between 8 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
Sincerely,
CITY OF OSHKOSH
