Adopt a municipal ordinance to restrict use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, cleaners, de-icers, and other chemicals which pollute the soil and water. From Environmental Conservation, section Natural Environment, subsection A more natural look. Would recommend entire paragraph for next year action item. Perhaps a committee could be formed to tackle. From Environmental Conservation, section Natural Environment, subsection Tree planting and retention. Continue work on terrace trees with an ordicance for city council to pass regarding planting trees during reconstruction. Would also be beneficial to have certain time periods when homeowners can request trees be planted in their terrace free of charge, such as in Menasha (on a 4-year rotation). From Environmental Conservation, section Natural Environment, subsection Native landscaping. Entire paragraph should also be action item for next year. Could be combined with "A more natural look" for working committee. From Managing Waste, section Waste Reduction. Explore volume-based garbage system to reduce waste going to landfill. From Managing Waste, section Composting. Partner with UWO Renewable Energy Facility biomass digester to convert community organic waste to electricity and heat. Explore the municipal collection of organic waste. From Managing Waste, section Non-biodegrades. Create ordinance that bans free plastic bags and styrofoam containers. Work with public and private housing providers to offer a mix of housing types affordable to low and moderate income owners and renters. From Green Economy, section Buying Local. Work with the Chamber of Commerce to research and publish a Green Business Directory to include green-collar companies and companies with improved sustainability. Kim Biedermann: 1. Work with the City of Oshkosh and the Common Council to create a streetscape tree ordinance for areas of new development, reconstruction and street repair. 2. Identify three new possible areas for community gardens and work with the City of Oshkosh to establish these gardens. 3. Identify one school to serve as an example for a small community garden • Team up with area schools to see if there are any schools that would have space/land available to establish an educational community garden for students • Use that school as an example for other schools who have the potential to establish a garden 4. Work with companies to improve their pollution reduction practices and technologies • Identify one or two companies that the SAB could team up with to start with • Use company (ies) as an example to other businesses and to even assist efforts with other companies • Create an educational piece to distribute to companies 5. Educate retailers about the impacts of plastic bags and encourage use of cloth bags • Explore the possibility of looking into a campaign to encourage the use of cloth bags--e.g. work with downtown retailers and see if x number of businesses would partner to offer cloth bags and a discount if bags are used 6. Identify a municipal building that may be suitable for a green roof and establish a timeframe for which this project could be completed.
