Since the issues involved with this installation involve not just the building code, they also involve the fire codes, I have been involving the fire chief in the decisions related to this issue so there is no conflicting direction between our departments. We have received the documentation that was provided for the New Shot Blast Booth, including the Plan review that was conducted by FM Global on July 22, 2010. Fire Chief Tim Franz and I have reviewed this information and have come to the following conclusion. We will allow the installation of the proposed blast booth without automatic fire suppression inside the blast booth based on the limitations included in the submitted documentation that include the following: 1. The actual booth is completely steel construction with no combustible finishes or exposed insulation or filters within the booth. Note that the initial proposal included an option for installation of rubber lined walls. The installation of any combustible material inside the proposed blast booth will require additional review prior to installation and may result in the requirement for a fire suppression system to be installed within the booth. 2. The Shot being used is steel and the parts being blasted are steel that may have an epoxy coating. Should the material being used as shot, or the materials and or coatings being blasted change this will need to be reviewed prior to the use of the booth for any new materials. 3. The blasting booth is used sparingly and is not part of normal everyday production operations. Should there be a need to expand the use of this booth in the future or if there is evidence of a hazard being created by a more intensive use of this booth further review may result in the need for additional fire protection requirements. 4. All other limitations and requirements contained in the FM Global plan review are also required to be met. If you have any questions, or there are any changes in the proposed installation feel free to contact us. Respectfu y Brian Noe Building Systems Consultant
