Oshkosh Sustainability Advisory Board
6:00 p.m., July 7, 2010
Room 404, Oshkosh City Hall
The meeting came to order at 6:00 p.m. Present were committee members Justin
Mitchell, Andrew Sabai, Kim Biedermann and Jan Scalpone. Also present Steve
Barney, SAB
1. Water conservation brochure. The group reviewed the water conservation brochure
revised by Peggy Steeno. She used our format and much of our material. We generally
liked it. Justin and Jan offered several suggestions. We agreed to list them, incorporate
them into the brochure and send the revised draft to Peggy and utility staff, plus the SAB.
We hope it will be finished in time to be mailed with this quarter's billings.
2. Water quality brochure. This is our next project to be mailed with water bills. We will
gather information and other brochures on the topic and at the next meeting list
information we think should be in a brochure, then forward it to Peggy, Steve and Dave to
put together. We may find a suitable brochure to recommend for purchase..
3. Shoreland Restoration. The Parks division removed the time /line and any references to
Onterra and themselves when they revised the shoreland restoration paper. We agreed
to reinsert information from the completed Onterra plan and recommendations without a
timeline. The paper will serve as guidance for our future action and to distribute to city
officials. Jan said she is writing the Environmental section of the city's Sustainability Plan
and has included our shoreland and natural area recommendations in that section.
4. Aquatic Plant Management. Onterra recommended chemical treatment until purchasing
a harvester in 2014. Andy suggested and we agreed to continue to object to chemical
use and explore ways to get mechanical treatment sooner.
5. Community Gardens. The Winnebago gardens are filled and so are most of the gardens
at the cemetery. Justin suggested we should try to get DNR to continue the lease in
Winnebago while we pursue sites closer in, and in each of the quadrants of the city. It
was suggested setting aside areas in industrial parks. Justin is writing a paper about
Community Gardens.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
