Background:
The Sustainability Advisory Board seeks to identify ways that the city can reduce greenhouse gas
emissions.
Energy Star recommends that municipalities consider including procurement language to specify
the purchase of Energy Star products when available to facilitate the procurement of energy -
efficient ENERGY STAR products to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They provide the
following example of language that the city could use in procurement contracts:
"The vendor must provide products that earn the ENERGY STAR and meet the ENERGY STAR
specifications for energy efficiency. The vendor is encouraged to visit energystar.gov for
complete product specifications and updated lists of qualifying products."
The greenhouse gas working group of this board is considering a proposal for the city to include
this language in procurement proposals. After discussing this with City Manager Rohloff, we
would like staff input into the impact of including this language in procurement contracts.
Proposal:
The Sustainability Advisory Board advises City Manager Rohloff to have staff analyze the
impact of including the above language in procurement contracts and report back to the
Sustainability Advisory Board for consideration.
