OLD BUSINESS: • Corky said that Mark would have more information for us on the conference we are sponsoring in 2010. NEW BUSINESS • None COMMITTEE REPORTS: OSC BOARD: • Claude Benedict reported that OSC Board and the Friends of the Senior Center are having some difficulty getting together. • There was discussion made about the master plan and when it would be available for review. • The City of Oshkosh does cover about 2/3 of the budget and the rest is made up through other income sources. • Mark said that there is a shortage in the budget and the Friends have helped in the past making up the operating budget. Last year Friends of the Seniors Center gave the center $30,000. CWAG: • Ann Jungwirth reported that they are waiting to see the direction with the new executive of CWAG. WINNEBAGO COUNTY COMMISSION ON AGING: This committee held its last meeting in December. This is now going to be ADRC (Aging & Disability Resource Center) this is a program that Mark Weisensel has been working on. There will be about six members from the current commission and then there will be more joining the board from disabilities, and a variety of different departments to give this a broader area covered. They hope to open in February or March. EDUCATION: • Mary Kay Rathe Senior Connections gave a talk about what she does here at the senior center. • Mary Kay supplies information and assistance to seniors. This could be with housing, transportation, support groups and referrals to a benefits specialist or anything else a person may need. • Information can be to caregivers who have elderly parents and do not know where to get help or what benefits that could help them. • This can include support groups, information for repair persons, snow shoveling and hair care if needed. All questions are appropriate. • Mary Kay can give reassurance to persons that there is help for them and their families. • Mary Kay has been trained in Medicare Part B. This plan has to be reviewed each year for different coverage. At age 65 you need to sign up for these plans or you can be penalized for not signing up for coverage. DIRECTORS REPORT: • Mark did tell that we do have a contract for the convention center and the hotel. The conference is going to be held on Tuesday October 5, 2010. The total rental cost is approximately $1,500.00 for both buildings. • The meeting of the steering committee is going to be on Thursday December 10, 8:00 a.m. • Mark encourages the committee to be there if a COA member can see themselves in a leadership role. • Mark talked about the funding for the conference. Funds would be coming from the half day senior conference that was left over. The amount is almost $1,000.00. They have passed that on to us to use for our conference. Judy Richie form Family Inc and myself got together and completed a grant application to the State Area Agency Office in Madison. Total grant money was $5,000.00; we did get the check last week. • Winnebago County Caregiver Coalition already has said that $4,000.00 was to be used for the conference. This maybe used to get a good speaker. There could be a number of care giving breakouts, for family caregivers, professional caregivers, and continuing educational credits. • Master plan update. January the master plan should be out. We plan on inviting the Committee on Aging, Friends of the Seniors Center Board, Oshkosh Seniors Board and staff to this meeting. We will be handing out the plan and future endeavors of programs and services for the Seniors Center. Then a month later we will have another meeting and have a third party facilitator there to conduct some strategic planning around this ten year plan. This would be to figure what is most important and what is realistic in completing these plans. • Community Health Improvement Process is held here. The primary purpose is to prioritize health concerns for the city and county. • WASC (Wisconsin Association of Senior Centers) Mark is a board member. State association is trying to get a state based company i.e. Kohl's, Kwik Trip, or Shopko, to promote the mission of senior centers across the state. • Veterans Day celebration here at the center fed 170 veterans and their spouses. Vocal group(Y- Not's) from Neenah YMCA sang. Some of the choir members were dressed in uniforms from all branches of the services. • Janis Dibble from the library attended a conference where they encouraged partnership with senior centers. OSC and the Oshkosh Library already have a program called Money Matters. This is a one week program. Part of the program is held here at our center and other part is being held at the library. There are seniors who go to the library and have never been to our center. There are seniors who come to our center but do not go to the library. We would like to set up more sharing programs in the future. • Options to Independent living. This is a not for profit program to make persons able to stay independent for a longer time. This program has been here at the center before to demonstrate what is available. We plan on bringing them back on a regular basis. There main office and demonstration facility is next to the Green Bay Technical School. Mark encouraged if you are in the Green Bay area to stop and take the tour of that facility. • Mark is still with Leadership Oshkosh. He shared that they had a government day with this group. They did a role play of the council meeting. Parts were assigned. • Mark would like to have the committee keep thinking about the parades. We were in the 4 of July parade but missed the time Christmas parade. Mark would like input on this idea. Really need a WOW factor. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS /CONCERNS: • Corky said that the 2010 Conference Committee met. The committee is Mark, Peggy, Kimberly and Corky. • Several things were discussed at this meeting. • One is a key note speaker, there are feelers out for this and the cost it would be. • Exhibitors, we have about 40 that were with the half day conference and they want to be included. • The committee is trying to get a list of sponsors for the convention. • The main hallway at the convention center has room for 12 exhibitors. Most of the exhibitors will be in the hotel ballroom. • A suggestion of having Bill Cosby come and speak was brought up. Mark said all options could be considered at this time. • Save the date cards for the conference, Kim has volunteered to do this card and also work on a flyer. • Information on Gatekeeper, now named Safe Watch. This program is for Calumet, Outagamie and Waupaca Counties. This program is under ADRC. A flyer was handed out at the meeting. • Corky gave an assignment for the committee to come with a list of sponsors and exhibiters for the conference. • Mark talked about what the entrance fee would be to help off set the cost of the food. • Corky wanted the committee to think about a chairperson or someone who can be. There is a list of the possible committee chairs that will be with these minutes. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:45 a.m. Fillmore /Benedict. Unanimous.
