Oshkosh, WI 54902 (920) 232 -5300 (920) 232 -5307 FAX Mark Ziemer Director, Senior Services OSHKOSH COMMITTEE ON AGING MINUTES OCTOBER 7, 2009 PRESENT: Corky Abraham, Kimberly Bauer, Claude Benedict, Lurton Blassingame, Kathryn Glander, Harold Singstock, Glenn Steinbrecher, Xandy Kloeckl, Peggy Bellin, Jesse Fillmore, STAFF Mark Ziemer, Director of Senior Services, Gerry Haverty Office Assistant Jason Hubbard UWO Intern for fall semester Meeting called to order by Chairman Corky Abraham at 8 Corrections of minutes was done and accepted. CORRESPONDENCE: Letter from Thomas Frazier of CWAG explaining they are not for profit and non partisan. They have a $25.00 membership fee. E mail from Lurton Blassingame, Education of the Committee on Aging not the public, Is the Seniors Center adequate to educate the public? 20 minute education session every other meeting with the committee reports at the opposite meetings. Housing directory put out every other year. Stopped doing that because of duplication being done. Who can we partner with to get to seniors who need services? OLD BUSINESS: Living in the 2010. Conference we are going to sponsor. We need COA members to take leadership roles on these committees. NEW BUSINESS: Will attempt to get Mary Kay Rathe Senior Connection to give a presentation at our December meeting. Susan Richards and Sue Panek from United Way presented the 211 program and how it works and what services they have. COMMITTEE REPORTS Education committee met on 9/22/09. Resulted in a subcommittee. One goal to inform Oshkosh seniors of resources that are available Another would be to educate us as a board. The members of the COA committee should be a resource to find out who needs help and pass on information and resources that we are aware of. How do we make connections to help identify the problems and needs in the community? DIRECTORS REPORT: Fall Family Fun Festival was a huge success. Not enough room. Cold storage shed should be cleaned out for next year. Granny Smith Walk Run is being held on October 9, 2009. Leadership Oshkosh retreat, Mark did get some great connections that could help the center. Half day conference that was held at the Expo Center will not be held next year they, they will be part of our conference living in the 2010. State Senior Center Conference in Milwaukee, some centers are equal with what we have, most centers are smaller. What impact do other centers have on their communities? Flu shot clinic to be held October 13, 2009. Working hard to educate the participants how the process works. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS /CONCERNS: Harold referenced to Article II. A and B in the COA By -Laws Harold stated it would be difficult go out and find the people who have needs. Educate how to get a referral on seniors who need help. Police Department is making connections with persons that may need help. Gatekeeper is a program to connect to police, postal workers, etc to be aware if there is a problem with a person. How big is the problem in the community? Unknown at this time. Create awareness of what the Seniors Center has to offer. Everything that is offered is not common knowledge. Medication management and meal management is one problem. Guardianship program, helping seniors with their finances. Winnebago County has this program. Start with referrals from the county and city health departments. One or two ideas of how to go about getting the needs met for seniors. CHIP purpose to ascess city and county health needs in the community. How are the needs of seniors changing over the years? Glenn to contact Mary Kay. Xandy to contact Wellness Village.
