SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY BOARD
October 5, 2009

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 4:00 by Chairman Ron Hardy.
APPROVE MINUTES
Steve Barney asked to change the word from documents to plans under the Sustainability Plan Steering
Committee Update section.
PUBLIC COMMENT
Todd Sohr, 530 Grand Street informed the Board that the EPA's community involvement session for the
superfund site has been delayed until winter or spring.
OUTREACH
Earth Charter Week, October 9 th through the 16 at UWO with a panel discussion on Wednesday the
14 to include Ron Hardy.
Margy Davey inquired about the possibility of having something in the Holiday Parade on November
12 to increase visibility of the board.
FOX VALLEY SUSTAINABILITY ACTION SUMMIT
Ron Hardy inquired about any interest from Board members attending Fox Valley Sustainability Action
Summit on October 22 at the Heckrodt Wetland Reserve in Menasha as it would be a good idea from
regional networking.
GREENHOUSE GAS WORKING GROUP UPDATE
Ron Hardy met with Dani Stolley the previous Friday to discuss the audit.
SUSTAINABILITY STEERING COMMITTEE
The Steering Committee needs another representative from the Sustainability Board because Dani
Stolley stepped down from the Board to work as an intern for the City to help develop the Sustainability
Plan and work on the Greenhouse Gas inventory.
TRANSPORTATION WORKING GROUP UPDATE
Principal Planner David Buck provided a memo to the Board on the status of the update to the
Pedestrian and Bicycle Circulation Plan. Steve Barney inquired if the plan would be adopted by the
Council as the '97 plan was not. Darryn Burich stated that was the plan. Members inquired if the Plan
would be brought before the Board. Mr. Burich stated that they were planning to have a session with the
Board prior to it being brought before the Plan Commission and Common Council.
WATER WORKING GROUP UPDATE
Jan Scalpone stated the Group had met and discussed the water brochure. Also the Board discussed
sending a "Thank You" letter to UWO for doing the sampling and implementing the water quality
monitoring program. Jan Scalpone moved and seconded by Bob Breese to send the letter (carried
unanimously).
The Board discussed whether Health had developed a budget for water testing next year. The estimated
cost was $300 -$600. Tony Palmeri stated that he would inquire during the City budget process.
Ron Hardy stated that he had talked with the stormwater specialist for the City, James Rabe, and that he
would attend a meeting of the group to discuss city stormwater plans.
PROGRESS ON 2009 GOALS
Goal 1, Public Awareness
Jan Scalpone stated that there wasn't enough media attention and that more press releases may be
needed to raise awareness of sustainability actions.
Goal 2, Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Dani Stolley is completing the inventory and getting targets.
Goal 3, Sustainability Planning Steering Committee
A new Board member will need to be appointed at the next meeting.
Goal 4, Transportation
Turnovers have impacted the group's activities.
Goal 5, Water Resources
Will continue to monitor beach testing.
Goal 6, Communication
Group will increase its activities.
There will be more goal setting at an additional meeting in December following a regular meeting of the
Board.
STIMULUS FUNDING UPDATE
No report at the meeting.
ADJOURN
There being no further business, Margy Davey moved and Tony Palmeri seconded that the meeting be
adjourned. Motion carried unanimously.
