Gohde, Assistant Director of Public Works DATE: September 17, 2009 RE: Change Order #1 for Public Works Contract No. 09 -06 / Fisher -Ulman Construction Inc./ Concrete Paving on 9 Avenue (Main to Nebraska) BACKGROUND Change Order #1 for Contract 09 -06 is scheduled for consideration by the Common Council at the September 22, 2009 meeting. The contract was originally awarded to Fisher -Ulman Construction Inc, of Appleton, WI in April of 2009. ANALYSIS In February of 2008 the Council approved Pay -go TIF funding for the redevelopment of the block between Main Street and Nebraska Street, 8 Avenue and 91h Avenue, the former Miles Kimball block in the South Shore Redevelopment Area. In an effort to improve the pedestrian access and provide traffic calming narrowin%of 9 Ave was included in the proosal. The proposal is to provide bump outs approximately mid block on 9 Ave. and at the intersection of 9 Ave and Nebraska Street. 9 Ave. will be narrowed to 38' in the areas where parking is allowed. This maintains one lane of traffic in each direction and parking on both sides. At the intersection with Main St., 9 Ave will widen back to its current width of 48' to accommodate turn movements. Sidewalks will be replaced on 9 Ave, Nebraska Street and 8th Ave. as well. The work was not included with the original bid. The contractor has agreed to perform the additional work at the bid prices in the contract. Additional storm sewer items have been added. The prices provided by the contractor are comparable to other bids of similar work. FISCAL IMPACT Funding for this project will come from currently available TID #20 South Shore Redevelopment District funds that have been earmarked for public improvements in this area. RECOMMENDATIONS I recommend approval of the Change Order # 1 to Contact No. 09 -06 in the amount of $107,861.57 to Fisher - Ulman Construction Inc. Respectfully Submitted, Steven M. Gohde Asst.
