SCOPE OF EVALUATION
The Betterliving® Patio Room Enclosure System manufactured by CraftBilt Manufacturing Co.
has been evaluated for conformance to the structural requirements of s. ILHR 21.02 (1), (2) and
(3), fire separation requirements of s. ILHR 21.08 (5), living unit separation requirements of s.
ILHR 21.08 (6) (c), and (d), foam plastic requirements (thermal barrier) of s. ILHR 21.11 (1),
(1) (a) and (1) (c), wall design requirements of s. ILHR 21.23 (1) and (2), exterior covering
requirements of s. ILHR 21.24, and roof design requirements of s. ILHR 21.27 of the current
edition of the Wisconsin Administrative Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC).

DESCRIPTION AND USE
The Betterliving® Patio Room Enclosure System comes in two basic models, the "A -Frame
Room" and the "Studio Room
The "A -Frame Room" roof construction features
a structurally designed ridge beam of extruded
aluminum alloy.
The "Studio Room" features a pitched roof with
a minimum slope of one inch to twelve. The
high side of the roof is fastened to the existing
structure by means of an extruded aluminum
alloy section.
The Betterliving® Patio Room Enclosure System can be erected on a concrete slab, a wood
deck, or as a raised balcony. Note, see LIMITATIONS section.

Note: The allowable roof live loads shown in both tables were taken from a chart that
had a range of 10 psf through 60 psf. The 30 psf and 40 psf roof live loads
(shown) pertain to Wisconsin.
For both the "A -Frame Room" and "Studio Room structural members shall comprise 6063 T6
Aluminum extrusions, and the roof panels shall consist of 3 4.5- or 6 -inch honeycomb or
polystyrene panels.

TESTS AND RESULTS
ASTM E 84 test reports were conducted by an independent third party laboratory, and submitted
on honeycomb panels with vinyl cleats and honeycomb panels with AL H- Stiffeners. The results

LIMITATIONS OF APPROVAL

The Betterliving® Patio Room Enclosure System, two basic models, the "A -Frame Room" and
the "Studio Room covered in this approval, are approved and limited to residential construction
only. This approval is not for a specific building, but rather an approval of the enclosure system
design concept. Each patio enclosure system shall have a permanently affixed identification tag
stating the name and address of the manufacturer.
The Betterliving® Patio Room Enclosure System two basic models, the "A -Frame Room" and
the "Studio Room" may be installed on a concrete slab, a wooden deck or a balcony. However,
all pertinent footing, foundation, structural requirements, and all modifications to an existing or
new deck or balcony shall be detailed, fire separations, living unit separation, etc., plans must be
submitted for review in accordance with the Wisconsin Administrative Dwelling Code, chapter
ILHR 20 -25. This approval does not include HVAC. Energy requirements. nor electrical
components.
The approval permits plan submittal without repetitious framing calculations. This approval is
for uniform loading conditions only. Any special concentrated loading or drift loading condition
required by s. ILHR 21.02 is not included under this approval number and requires complete
structural calculations.
In accordance with s. ILHR 21.11(1), (1) (a) and (d) of the Uniform Dwelling Code, a thermal
barrier shall be installed with foam panels. No thermal barrier is required with honeycomb
panels.
This approval will be valid through December 31, 2001, unless manufacturing modifications are
made to the product or a re- examination is deemed necessary by the department. The Wisconsin
Material Approval Number must be provided when plans that include this product are submitted
for review.

1.2 INTRODUCTION
11 -1 BACKGROUND
The patio rooms referenced in this package, known commercially as Betterliving®
Patio Rooms, are manufactured and sold by Craft -Bilt Manufacturing Company of
Souderton, PA. Craft -gilt Manufacturing Company has manufactured a wide range of
aluminum home improvement products since 1946.
11 -2 BETTERLIVING PATIO ROOM SYSTEMS
A- FRAME (ZOOM
I The gable or A -Frame roof construction features a
structurally designed ridge beam of extruded aluminum
alloy. The introduction of an independently supported ridge
beam essentially eliminates all outward thrust at the
eaves level.
!J STUDIO ROOM
The mono -pitch or studio roof system features roof with a minimum slope of one inch per foot of
projection. It is fastened to the existing structure by
means of an extruded aluminum alloy section.
Betterliving Patio Rooms have been installed successfully in a variety of locations, as shown:

11 -3 STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES
Honeycomb and polystyrene panels were tested for Toad and deflection performance in
accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) method
E72 -80. Work was performed under the supervision of an independent engineering
laboratory. Span tables in this package show the allowable roof loads.
11 -4 FIRE RATINGS
Honeycomb and Polystyrene panels were tested for fire resistance by an independent
testing laboratory. Based on the test results, the panels are classified as Type 5B
construction materials.
11 -5 WARRANTY
Properly installed products are warranted by the manufacturer. Contact Craft -gilt
Manufacturing Co. or refer to the Betterliving Engineering Manual for further
information.

under laboratory conditions.
Installation Guidelines
1) Spacing between fasteners shall always exceed 0.5 inches.
2) Clearance between fasteners and edge of sheet or shape shall always exceed 0.5 inches.
3) Use a standard screwgun with a depth sensitive nosepiece to install Teks. For optimal
fastener performance, the screwgun should be a minimum of 4 amps and have a RPM
range of 0 -2000.
4) Adjust the screwgun nosepiece to properly seat the fastener.
5) Set new magnetic sockets correctly before use. Remove chip buildup as needed.
6) The fastener is fully seated when the head is flush with the work surface.
7) Overdriving may result in torsional failure of the fastener or stripout of the substrate.
8) The fastener must penetrate beyond the metal structure a minimum of 3 pitches of
thread.

1) For calculation purposes (Table 72 -1 through 76 -1), assume:
Allowable pull out strength of 8 -18 T2 in 0.024' aluminum sheet 70 lb.
Silicone bonding transfers 25% of connection load.
Allowable shear strength of 8 -18 T2 in 0.024" aluminum sheet 170 Ib.
Allowable bearing strength of 8 -18 T2 in 0.065" aluminum sheet 125 lb.
