Mark Ziemer Oshkosh, WI 54902 Director, Senior Services (920) 232 -5300 (920) 232 -5307 FAX BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE OSHKOSH SENIORS CENTER MEETING MINUTES JUNE 29, 2009 PRESENT: Claude Benedict, Don Christman, Bob Cornell, Ellen Hofeldt, Dennis Penney Judy Pierson, Dale Sonnenberg, Ralph Nielson, Donna Pipkorn, John Hauser, Barb Goldthwaite, Don Wolter STAFF: Mark Ziemer, Director of Senior Services, and Judy Brewer, Activities Coordinator Meeting was called to order by Ralph Nielson 1 pm. The April 27 and June1, 2009 minutes were approved with the discussed corrections. VOTE ON BY LAWS The By -Laws were approved with discussed corrections. FACILITIES COMMITTEE: No Meeting FUND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE: The committee reported that a monetary accumulative recognition board for both buildings is being discussed. The acknowledgment dollar value has not yet been determined. The committee reported the Center will have an Annual Giving Campaign in 2009. GOVERANCE COMMITTEE; The committee completed the revisions of the By -Laws for approval at the June 29, 2009 meeting. FRIENDS: Donna Pipkorn reported that 150 members have not renewed their memberships. FOSC will sponsor Molly Butz to attend a conference in Florida. FOSC will pay for Mark's Ziemer's Leadership Oshkosh workshop FOSC is selling raffle tickets with the winners to be announced at the Fall Family Fun Fest on September 13, 2009. COMMITTEE ON AGING: The Committee on Aging along with other community agencies will sponsor an informational workshop in April 2010 that will focus related issues for adults 50 plus including housing, transportation, etc. This workshop will be similar to The Living in 2000's workshop, held at the Oshkosh Convention Centre. DIRECTORS REPORT: Mark reported that Winnebago County and the Oshkosh Committee on Aging are looking at the Gatekeeper Program. It is similar to the Neighborhood Watch Program but has greater focus on older adults. This project also asks such questions as: Do you know the older adults in your neighborhood? What should I do to assist older adults in my neighborhood? Monitoring if the lawn not cut, mail left in the mailbox, shades down during daylight hours? What does that mean? How can I help? The Center will participate in the Fourth of July Parade with a Public Enemies theme. Mark asked the committee members to participate by walking and carrying signs telling what the Center has to offer. The North Building will get a new copier this week. Winnebago County and City Of Oshkosh's Health Department are in the process of looking at how to best serve the population in this community. The Center is pushing to put more focus on the older adult population in the City of Oshkosh and surrounding community. Cindy Glatz has been hired as the Fund Development Coordinator. She will also create a brochure to tell our story. This is one of the first tools used to convince a company or individual to donate to the Center. The Vision Oshkosh suggested that the greatest needs in our community are: expanded shopping opportunities, connected thoroughfares, friendly neighborhoods, and walking and biking trails. Mark stated that another slogan should be Oshkosh A Great Place to Retire. The Center has established a connection with UW- Oshkosh School of Nursing to bring students to the Center for foot care, fitness assessments, blood pressure clinics and individual consultations. This program should be in place by January 2010. The installation of the wireless Internet service in the south building and loop hearing system and the computer projector plus DVD player in the willow room is completed. The Center has purchased a propane gas grill. FOSC discussion continues regarding the word membership since it continues to create confusion rather discussion continues on the word Supporter of the Center. The goal is have the new language and recruitment literature ready for 2010. The City's website does have the Center's newsletter available for viewing. UNFINSIHED BUSINNES: None NEW BUSINNESS New OSC challenge or vision is: Get well Get Involved make OSC the best place in the Mid -West. Mark stated that he plans to have the Master Plan ready for review in August or September for a joint meeting with the Board, Committee on Aging and FOSC Board. Discussion on the use of pole shed continues. Suggested upcoming community marketing opportunities: Home Garden Show County Fair Church and Health Clinic Fairs etc. Bob Cornell has suggested a portable display booth for marketing the Center. Committee Meeting Dates: Governances- 2nd Monday, Fund Development, 3 rd Monday and Board, last Monday of the month. 2
