I was a candidate in the 2009 Oshkosh City Council
race. Because of running for this position, I learned
about our city and was required to answer questions in
public about the direction of Oshkosh, and I also
listened to the input from the citizens on these matters.
Because of that I was in an excellent position to find a
common ground between citizen/community wants
and needs. I still have a lot of contact with the public,
and I believe that gives me a great opportunity to get a
feel for what the people are expecting and looking for
from Oshkosh.

In running for the common council I knew that I
wanted to do whatever I could to help my city. Even

above Board /Commission. though I was not elected, I can still accomplish this
goal by serving on this.commission. I want to serve
because I feel that I can bring new and fresh ideas to
the table, and I am flexible enough to understand that
if even a small part of an idea is used, I've helped the
City of Oshkosh. Also, with the upper level managerial
experience I've had I'm used to thinking outside of the
box. I understand the importance of planning for both
the long and short term, as often times one decision
can have widely varying results.. depending on the
time frame. I believe that my perspectives will do
nothing but help our city.

With 10 years as a newspaper journalist in Oshkosh,
I've grown to respect this community its people and its
challenges while developing a solid, diverse network
of connections. I've served as a youth mentor through
Big Brothers Big Sisters and a volunteer tutor for the
Winnebago County Literacy Council. As a newspaper
reporter and then editorial page editor, I was expected
to probe and shine a light on some of Oshkosh's
biggest roadblocks and obstacles and also tell of its
triumphs -- all this for a daily audience of 20,000 to
25,000 readers. Frequently, the library was not only a.

and people effected by them met and spoke up.

younger audiences demand more connection to. the
world. As our culture gravitates toward an online
existence, it's still important to preserve a living,
breathing publicly shared, owned and maintained
PLACE. I hope to help push the library in not only
continuing its digital evolution but also in better
engraining itself into the community -- become its
living room, entertainment den and lecture pit. I think
a Gen -Xer straddling that line of appreciation between
the traditional library and the rapidly - evolving one of
the Information Age can be a big help. Above all else,
I view this as civic service... which means work and
sacrifice to improve our community. Thanks for the
opportunity.

Experience _qualifications_training:
I served as a Case Manager for the Title V low income program Experience
Works for almost 2 years working solely with clients that were 55 and
older. I have the ability to listen without being judgemental to senior
problems. I have the ability to establish rapport with seniors that
enables me to assist and encourage them. As case manager part of my
duties was to assess individual needs and find the resources within the
community.
Reason_for_wanting_to_serve:
I want to be able to make a contribution to other Seniors in Oshkosh.
Serving on this committee would allow me to reach out and help other
Seniors in the community. I have knowledge of some of the services
offered through the Senior Center and other agencies in the county. Just
turning 65 myself I know the value of senior connections. Through
service on this committee I can make the connections that will enhance
someones life.

I want to improve the health of Oshkosh's environment
for all. My family breaths the Oshkosh air, drinks the
Oshkosh water and even eat the fish that grow in the
water around the city. I want my kids to be healthy,
and I want to leave the state of the environment better
than I found it.

training that would be relevant to the position that you are interested in?
I have computer skills in word processing and spreadsheets. I have experience in
accounting and purchasing. I currently serve as secretary for the National Alliance on
Mental Illness — Oshkosh affiliate and am involved in teaching the Family to Family
Education Program. I have volunteered at EAA for many years working in the

I am passionate about history. I believe that our history needs to be preserved so that
future generations learn of the struggles, hardships and triumphs of those that have come
before us and to understand that life has not always included cell phones, televisions,
MP3 players, etc. I would sincerely enjoy being apart of this progressive board. Not
only would this opportunity fuel my own person interests but it would give me the
opportunity in some small way to contribute to the preservation of the history of my
community.
