Subject: Application for appropriate Building Permits.
To Whom It May Concern:
In April of 1997 I went to pick up a permit to change my basement from an unfmished to
a finished basement. As part of the refinishing I also wanted to add a heat run and
upgrade my electric service from 100 to 200 amp. I asked personnel at the city what I
would need and was directed to see Mr. John Sullivan. I received the attached permits.
I then proceeded with the project and studded up the walls. All walls are 2x4
construction. I had my brother-in-law perform the rough electrical work. My brother-in-
law is a licensed electrical contractor (Erin Electric, Washington County) and an
electrical inspector in Hartford, Wisconsin.
I then contacted Mr. Sullivan and asked if he would come out and check out the electric
work before I installed the drywall. He said I should proceed with the project that he
would check it upon completion. I asked if I needed something in writing, he said he
would make a note for the file.
I then proceeded to apply the drywall in the recreation room. The two outside walls of
the recreation room have a vapor barrier on the internal side and are insulated. This can
still be checked from the top of the walls. I also installed a drop ceiling in the recreation
room. All other walls are studded only (no drywall) with rough wiring. They are all
open for any needed inspections. The project then sat dormant for a period because I
coach my children's sports teams and didn't have the time to work on it.
Last month my brother-in-law changed the service out, but is unable to complete the rest
of the electrical work. I asked my neighbor about a local electrician and during the
course of the conversation, he indicated I should check with the city to see if I needed
additional construction permits.
I called the city last week and was informed I needed a sketch of the project, what the
rooms would be used for, and the estimated cost. The attached sketch provides the plan
and what the rooms are to be used for. I estimate the cost to be approximately $8,000.
I request any and all applicable permits to complete this job and apologize for any
inconvenience this misunderstanding my have caused.
Sincerely,
Doug P. Jarm z
