Director of Engineering Wick Homes P.O. Box 188 Mazomanie, WI 53560 ' Dear Mr. Reinhard: SAFETY & BUILDINGS DIVISION 201 E. Washington Avenue P.O. Box 7969 Madison, Wisconsin 53707 This letter is in reference to your letter of March 25, 1985 concerning the Uniform Dwelling Code requirement ILHR 21.03(8). I agree that the code is quite clear in stating that 2' 8" doors are required for access to the "common use" areas of the house. Abasement used only for storage or laundry would not be considered to be a common use area and therefore the door to the basement stairs could be a 2' 6" door. If the basement contained a recreation area or a family room then it would have to be considered a common use area and as such would require access openings of not less than 2' 8" in width. I trust the above adequately clarifies the content and intent°uf the subject Uniform Dwelling Code requirement which is based on accessibility of the house for use by handicapped persons.
