Plane ~'ar the above have been stamped '~Appraved - ee Correspondence"
which refers to this letter and 1 cagy is being returned to you.
Your plan to divide the classrooms with folding partitions is acceptable
with the understanding that a permanent passage will be maintained.
The prime Qbje¢tian to this arrangement is that students from one roam
moat pave through another to reatzh the earridar. This disturbance may
be ob~ectianable but we assume the idea hoe been accepted by the
owners.
The existing rear stair enclosure mentioned is not clear on the plena,
however, w• ca~a advise that nny doors to a required stair enclosure
shall be self-closing, fire-resistive doors of 1-hour construction.
The exits as shown are apprave~i vith the exception that the corridor
in the 2-story addition proposed for the future shall extez~;d through
to the north ac~rridor as shown an the original prelic~inary plena.
There must be 2 ways to exit from these clasaraar~a.
The minimum acceptable exit facility we can permit far the temporary
access to the prcjectian booth is a ahip~a ladder with proper handrails.
The angle t h e ~.addar shall make with the horizontal shall be no more
than 75 degrees.
VentilatioA shall be provideu far all toilet soma.
bTaadralYa~ shsTl ba installed on bath sides of all stairways.

This interpretatioaf brings ug another point about which I am wottder-
iaag if your are aware. Since the ground floor must be classit'ied is
a b~ssemea~It itt order to permit 2-stor3- clas8ificstioa~, please be
advised that Ittcs. 5b.1~ allows tto basement c2assroums, that is, rooms
whose flaorlinera s.re wore than 2 feet below the t~d~oinittg gxade.
~'he grelimittary plans thus Par reviewed do not show haw this require-

Edith reference to your letter of January•I,, 1959, I must say this
was sn aversignt ~n any part due to the fact that 14 ~.u not have in
my posuess:icn apt t;~ie time your lettflr of December 16, :t95B.
With tax"stance to Ind 53.10{5) where nonbearing walls contest leas
than 2-hour, fire-resistive supports at the top, the height shall bs
not more than 24 tiAna~s their thickness. Ir year case, you e,rc~ allowed
feet in the clsr~r any which you are within this limit due to ;h®
height indicateu ors your plans of 7ri•-5/~~. ~f.s height includes ar~ly
that portion of the masonry wall. and not the glees area for computing
this height. Your arx'r~n~;emsnt appears to be atisfactGry.
With refsrence to °nu 55.21(b~ 1 must say this w~.ll. be r€~t~+er difficult
to answer in woras ~lansq anywa;~ I sincerely hope this will-answer your
question anal r3arify this paint. The 6~ under pertains only to that
portion which ie 6 ~ above the opening +,~ a line dx•a~n parade? to th®
op+~raing across the entire stage from w~.ng wall to wing wall. That ia,
using your Dees fir example, if you were to draw a Sine fro~a th® paint
of intersection ~=f the ceiling; and the 'top c%f the wing wall. parallel to
the top of ±~~ ;r;ening attd =neasure this ~:~istance you will find it ap-
praximatel;,~ ~";' ~µ°:,~.ch is less than ~ ~ wh~.ch '? s rec~ui.rec?.
In cases where the ;Ditch of a roof is greater ar should I a~a~- higher
thereby leaving >~n extensive a>aaunt of area between the tap cf the
opening and the vertex of the cef~.ng, this entitle distance should be
cor~sidereel. The ~loint I am trying -t,o make i.e that in the case ~rherQ
you have a high pitch ceiling and. using the same explanation as I used
before and craw a line at the intersection of the wing wall and the
sailing prallal tc the tag of the openings you will fi~a:i cansi~ierable
amount of apace above this parallel line to the vertex of the ceiling
and this space caulc~ very well be used for the storage of preps, scenery
and what have you. Naturally this is a fire hazard and is the reason far
having the proscenium walls and curtains.
