HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes OSHKOSH COMMITTEE ON AGING MINUTES NOVEMBER 7, 2007 Present: Claude Benedict, Dr. Jean Caudle, Jesse Fillmore, Ann Jungwirth, Kara Klein, Kristi Knudsen, Jerry Konrad, Ruth McGinley, Joan Rogers, Toby Rosenberg, Glen Steinbrecher, and Chairman Donna Altepeter Excused: Corky Abraham Staff: Mark Ziemer, Director of Senior Services, and Vickie Rand, Office Assistant Guests: Harold Singstock Chairman Altepeter called the meeting to order at 8 a.m. Ruth McGinley introduced Lt. Zimmerman of the Winnebago County Traffic Safety Commission. Lt. Zimmerman’s presented information in regards to driving issues which included fatality statistics, and noted the top three causes of accidents to be lack of seat belt use, alcohol and speed, along with aggressive and inattentive driving. He stated there is a bill pending to have wearing seat belts become a primary violation by which the authorities would be able to pull you over. Lt. Zimmerman also discussed Round Abouts and noted the statistics of how they have decreased crashes by 39%, injuries by 76%, and fatalities by 90%. He also stated Round Abouts could handle approximately 8,000 cars a day. Lt. Zimmerman answered questions the Committee had and stated educating the public was a key factor in safe driving. Chairman Altepeter called for approval of the October 3, 2007 Meeting Minutes. Motion by Dr. Caudle for approval of the October 3, 2007 meeting minutes as distributed. Seconded by Fillmore. Unanimous. CORRESPONDENCE Mark stated there was correspondence from the Ladies Benevolent Society regarding their Grant Program. He stated we have received one grant for 2007 from them, and are looking for more for 2008. Kara Klein announced that she has accepted a position in Milwaukee and would be moving. She thanked the Committee for their support and hard work and stated her resignation would be affective as of January 1, 2008. Dr. Caudle stated she has received the State of Wisconsin Blue Book for 2007-2008 and donated it to the Center. Committee On Aging Minutes November 7, 2007 1 DIRECTOR’S REPORT: MARK ZIEMER Mark reported that the Gift Shop would be moving to the North Building this month. Mark also reported that he has been working with Dr. Caudle and Ann Jungwirth in regards to the Coalition for Wisconsin Aging Groups (CWAG) and they will be attending a reorganizational meeting on November 12 – Going Back to Basics – and welcomed the Committee to attend as part of the Coalition of Aging Groups in Wisconsin. Ann Jungwirth also noted a Convention for Seniors will be held on July 9 in Green Bay, hosted by Bart & Sherry Star. Mark also announced that Sara Pritzl is a new employee for the Center and will be working as a part-time receptionist at the North Building. COMMITTEE REPORTS Claude Benedict stated the Senior Center Board of Directors was updating their Constitution, which the Committee would be seeing in the near future. He also stated the Board was working on reducing committee’s from 11 to 3. OLD BUSINESS 2008 Budget: Chairman Altepeter questioned how the 2008 budget process was coming along. Mark stated he felt the budget workshop went well and the Common Council will be making their decision on the 2008 budget for the City at the November 27th Council meeting. NEW BUSINESS 2008 Planner: Chairman Altepeter stated the Committee should draw from the current planner for the remainder of the year and work on the 2008 Planner in February. Mark stated it would be good to sponsor a driving/round about conference. Discussion followed and it was the consensus to collaborate with the CWAG and Triad to develop a conference. Volunteers for an ad-hoc committee will be sought at the next meeting. Schedule Speaker: Joan Rogers stated she would follow the Speaker’s Survey in securing future speakers.
