HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Board of Directors of the Oshkosh Seniors Center Meeting Minutes- Monday May 23, 2005 Attendance : Board members: Bill McCarthy; Jesse Fillmore; Mary Luepke; Ellen Hofeldt; Ralph Nielsen; Judy Troudt; Roger Westphal; Barbara Ruedinger; Ginny Rice and Esther Stegemann. Excused member: Phyllis Hill. Guest members were; Bob Hoffman; Jim Dyer; Mona Walker and Don Wolter Staff Members: Sue Kreibich, Aging Services Manager; Bobbie Luft, Center Office Assistant; Judy Brewer, Center Supervisor; Molly Butz, Program Coordinator and Jessica Krenz, Student Intern working under Molly this summer. President Bill McCarthy called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. Esther Stegemann made a motion and Jesse Fillmore seconded that the agenda be approved as written. Jesse Fillmore made a motion and Judy Troudt seconded to accept the minutes as written. REPORTS: Aging Services Manager , Sue Kreibich announced an orientation meeting to be held June 6, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. for new Board members. Sue attended a Fund Raising training, led by Boris Frank. The Committee on Aging recommended that the strategic plan be updated. The strategic plan would be used for everyone to work from, so this would include the Center as a whole. There will be a meeting on May 31 at 3:30 p.m. with Boris and everyone is welcome to attend. Mr. Frank helped with the feasibility study for purchase of Annex. There is around $20,000 left from the roof project to pay for a consulting firm to take a look at the cost of renovating the pole shed at the Annex. This may be used for fox fitness expansion. Sue passed out recommendations from the last update of the Long- Range Plan that was developed in 1999. Presentations are planned for Medicare Part D. The dates will be posted in the Senior Doings. The Social Security Administration will also be hosting meetings at the Center to help those fill out forms that meet requirements. Those dates too will be posted in the next Senior Doings. Jerry Kratsch resigned from the Oshkosh Committee on Aging. He was the Committee representative on the Board of Directors; Kristin Cimera will replace Jerry as liaison to the Board. Facilities/Maintenance: Jesse Fillmore announced that the roof is complete. The Friends of the O.S.C. will be covering the cost for Martens to finish the HVAC work at the Annex and Main Facility. th Friends: The Strawberry Fest will be held at South Park on June 12. Dues will be increasing to $15 for single and will remain $20 for couple. Barb Ruedinger, President of the Friends, was asked to describe for the incoming members the purpose of the Friends. The Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center is a support system of the Center; they are a non-profit charitable organization. They host several fund raising activities each year. Last year they donated $50,000 to the Center. Winnebago Senior Tours is an umbrella of the Friends, their profit goes to the Friends. Programs: Ginny Rice reported that Taste of the Towne attendance doubled from the previous year. She stated that it was the best ever. WNAM was at the Senior Prom. There were 72 attendees, several of the regulars were not there. West High School O’Neil Honor Society (that included about 50 students) hosted the dance. Ginny passed out a sheet with the financial history of the dances for 2005. As of today’s date the dance profit is $459.51. Ginny will continue to stay on the dance committee even though she’ll be going off the Board. Dances are planned through August. There will be a new band in June, that plays country and polkas as well as the usual. Ginny said she had a pleasure working with Molly. The volunteers love her and she is well organized. She also stated that Nancy Samida is excellent also, and that Nancy and Molly work well together. Ginny stated that she thinks that the computer lab is st outstanding. Molly Butz, Center Program Coordinator announced that the 1 Senior Triathlon will be held in May. This is co-sponsored by Citizens First; Big Apple Bagels; YMCA; and the Seniors Center. Winners will be posted in the paper. The Wearable Arts had an attendance of 86 people. This is sponsored by Fox Valley Technical College and co-sponsored by the Seniors Center. National Senior Health and Fitness will be held on May 25, this is sponsored by Affinity and the Seniors Center. The kick-off of Summer Games will start with Bridge on June 17. Games will then continue from June 20-24. Molly introduced Jessica, an intern from UWO. She will be working 600 hours this summer, finishing nd her hours on September 2. th Publicity: Roger Westphal reported that there will be a Publicity Meeting held on the 6 of June. This meeting will include looking into local publications for advertisement. Linda Verwiel, Marketing Coordinator for the Center is staff to this committee. Linda works 15 hours per week and her wages are paid by the Friends to the City. Special Fund Raising: Sue Kreibich updated the Board with the progress made with the Badger Band. They will not confirm a date until November or December for next year. Three dates have been give to them; Sunday, April 2, Sunday, April 9 and Thursday April 6. We are hoping to get a date for Sunday afternoon. It will be held at the Civic Auditorium. The total cost should be around $13,000. The band will receive a minimum of $3000 or 50% of the profit, whichever is greater. There will be around 100- 150 band members. Bus transportation to and from performance is required as well as a meal. There are 1400 seats available in the auditorium. The committee is looking for sponsorship from outside sources to help with costs. RE-Accreditation: Ellen Hofeldt said the re-accreditation is important because it puts a feather in the Centers reputation. The Wisconsin Association of Senior Centers Annual meeting will be held in September and that’s where we would receive our re-accreditation. The Review team will come sometime in July or August. Ellen Hofeldt moved, Ginny Rice seconded and the motion was carried to go on with re-accreditation and set-up a date. Sue will have the materials available before the next Board meeting to be reviewed. New Business: Election of officers for 2005-2006 term. Roger Westphal nominated Bill McCarthy to remain as Board President, Esther Stegemann seconded and all members were in favor. Ellen Hofeldt nominated Mona Walker as Vice-President, Mary Luepke seconded and all members were in favor. Ralph Nielsen nominated Judy Troudt as secretary, Roger Westphal seconded, and all members were in favor. Roger Westphal moved, Judy Troudt seconded and motion was carried to close nominations. Announcements: Bill McCarthy thanked members going off of the Board for all of their time and effort throughout the years they served as members. Sue Kreibich passed out certificates of appreciation to those members leaving. If there is anyone with ideas for a new agenda please share them with Sue. Judy Brewer Center Supervisor welcomed new Board members and asked all members to fill out volunteer forms. She also reminded all to sign the volunteer book with hours of service.
