REPORTS:
Aging Services Manager
, Sue Kreibich, shared information about some of the groups that she is
affiliated with through the Center. One such group is the Caregivers Support Network; they will
be sponsoring a Caregiver Fair on October 29. If you would like to volunteer or attend please
contact Sue. She is also involved with Community for Hope. This is a suicide prevention
organization. Nationwide, elderly men composed one of the highest groups of people who
attempt and succeed at taking their life. Sue thought it very important to have Center involvement
with this issue and again asked for any volunteers to get involved with this group. Lutheran
Social Services sponsors an AODA (Alcohol and other Drug Abuse) counselor and a mental
health counselor to work out of the Center in serving seniors. Jennie Kosko, the AODA
counselor, is available on Tuesday afternoons. Pat Valentyn, the mental health counselor, is
available all day on Tuesday. Pat also facilitates the Visually Impaired Group at the Center.
There will be a White House Conference on Aging meeting at Park Plaza on April 18 from 8:30
a.m.-4:30 p.m. There will be a cost of $15, which will include lunch. Anyone interested in going
can talk with Sue. Sue announced that she had received a written resignation letter from Board
member, LuAnn Robinson, effective immediately. Whoever is chosen to take her place will serve
the term through 2007. The City Center is now closed to walkers; the Annex is open to walkers
certain times. There is a possible outlook as to renovating the pole shed at the Annex. Sue has
asked Jackson Kinney to discuss with Public Works their continued leasing of that area.
As of March 15the Annex Mortgage is paid off; special thanks to all the donors and Friends of
the Oshkosh Seniors Center for many years of payment and hard work. A special thank you to
Carol Helmer for all of her time put into taking care of the paperwork involved. Sue asked the
Friends for financial support for 2005 at their last Friends Board Meeting. She requested funding
of $10,000 for Center general staff support; $7960 to finance the Center Program Assistant
position; $10328 to support the Marketing Coordinator position; $525 for Wisconsin Warmers
too purchase supplies; the cost of a 20” Grizzley Planer for the woodshop; piano tuning and the
cost of bingo supplies. This totals about $30,000 for the year. The request was approved.
Staff of the Seniors Center will be getting their computers updated. The roof bid was opened last
th
week and will be completed by June 30. The Council will be approving the low bid at its first
meeting in March. It was decided that the lower cost rubber roof would be used; this means there
will have to be routine maintenance done by an outside firm. The roof cost is being paid by
Block Grant dollars. It has a 10-year warranty. Fox Fitness fee revenues have doubled since
January of last year and Exercise class and Computer class revenues have also increased.
Material passed out included the ridership of the Senior Shuttle for February and a handout given
that elaborates on the presentation that was held at Carmel. A reminder that Powerful Tools for
Caregiving will be starting in May and will be held at he Center.
Facilities/Maintenance:
Jesse Fillmore spoke on how the committee analyzed all angles to best
decide what should or shouldn’t be done with the heating and air conditioning units at both
facilities. The committee recommended making the suggested changes without putting a separate
furnace for the offices at the Annex. The Friends have agreed to pay for these expenses. Jessie
Fillmore moved; Ralph Nielsen seconded and the motion was carried to accept the committee
recommendations.
Friends
Barbara Ruedinger, President of the Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center, reported that
the Friends Membership is at 815 members, this is still including those that have not renewed.
Those that have not renewed will be deleted soon and will be added as new as payment is made.
Bingo will be discontinued, as there is no one who is willing to take over after Doris Nordhaus
retires. Last year bingo gave $1,000 to the Seniors Center. There is an average of 60 attending
bingo on Saturdays. Friends are checking into the legalities of selling pull-tabs out of the Gift
Shop. Discussions on how to develop more fund raising ideas are continuous.
Programs:
Ginny Rice reported that in January the cost of monthly dances will go from $3 to $4.
th
The 30 Anniversary Dance will have a cover charge of $5. There will be extra door prizes as
well as a half an hour longer for the entertainment. Ginny is getting more requests from area
bands that they would like to play for the Center’s Dances. Molly Butz, Program Coordinator,
reported that the computer enrollment fair went well; a total of 58 participants signed up at the
last enrollment. On March 13, Encore Senior Living will sponsor the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner.
The cost for the ticket is $5.50. Over $505 was raised at the Pancake Breakfast that was
sponsored by Alterra Sterling House. This money went to help support the Wisconsin Warmers.
April 26 is Taste of Towne. Sponsors are ThedaCare; Seniors Center and Oshkosh Community
Access Channel. The Seniors Center, City Rec. Department and the YMCA will be holding the
st
1 Senior Triathlon in May. An entry fee of $3 will be paid for this three- day event. Citizens’
First Credit Union made a cash donation for this event; Big Apple Bagels will provide
